Hey guys ive been lookin g at a few 300tdi's and i cant decide how many miles is too many, most in my price range will be about 70-130k on the clock, i know that these engines last a long time but i dont want to buy one then find 100k is when say timing chain goes on them, i am reasonably competent with fixing engines, however my skill is more giveing a good service, cleaning up etc so i dont mind the odd hiccup
thanks ben

300TDI is a cam belt for a start, so thats ok, I believe the term for this is 60K, Ive just bought a '96 with 110K on it, which is less than my 9 y/o sedona of 112K
IFAIK properly looked after it will go well over 250K

The engine doesnt really matter, as long as its strong and non smokey theres not much else you can tell, the important bit is the chassis really, it could have 20K on it but if its sat in a field it will be rotten compared to a 200K road machine that was washed every week...

Mine is on 170K (200tdi) and has had an engine, I am on original crossmember although its had a few patches, I have seen lower mileage ones in much worse condition. My axles were quite worn and my box jumps out of first but I put my 300TDi disco axles on and I will be rebuilding the box, it will be like new(ish) then but still showing 170K...

Ok thanks guys !! Just so i know, is it easy to do the belt ? And anyone have a rough guess as to what a garage would charge me if i got them to do it ? Thanks

Its not hard if your competent, a garage will charge a bit as there is a fair bit of stripping down. You need to check its had the modified pulleys fitted as well (i expect so at 100K+ miles).

Independant garage you'll be looking at £150 - £200 in labour

Parts are about £80

Main dealer - yoiu really don't want to know! Oh OK then, £750 - £850:eek:
