How loud is your 1.8?

Hey guys,

Still haven't managed to shift mine, nevermind. Just wondering, in case I do keep it, one thing that really fooks me off about it is how loud the engine noise is in the cabin, it just sounds like it's struggling constantly and it's really off putting. 70 is like being in a lancaster bomber, that's be shot at, and is going down. There is an aftermarket exhaust manifold on it, and an aftermarket back box (the cheapest I could find at the time.) I'm sure that has something to do with it, but surely it can't make that much of a difference can it?

So is yours quiet or loud? I know this will have to generalised but dfoes it get on your tits ever? or is it just me?

I dont think the 1.8L is the right motor for the Freelander. Mine wasnt really loud, but the RPM was to high all the time. Like it was chasing all the time. The diesel is much much better and you can drive at a comfortably RPM.

A original exhaust might cure some off the sound, but the RPM is still annoying.

I wouldn't say mine was overly loud, it can be a bit noisy when your working it on the windy stuff. seems fine on the motorway at 70ish, 80 can be a bit hectic sounding...

The noise you hear doesn't come from 1 particular sound source but is more a mix of lots of different sounds. Iirc you have BFG AT-KO? They will be adding extra noise to your Freelanders engine, gearbox,IRD and rear diff. Also as the suspension bushes age they transfer more road noise into the cabin.
My 1.8 was noisier than my V6 so the engine does account a large part of the noise at motorway speeds. My V6 is spinning at 3100 rpm at 70, I'm sure my 1.8 was closer to 4000 rpm at the same speed.

It was just as bad before the polybush engine mounts and AT tyres. It's always been really loud. The RPM is definitely a cause, you have to rev the nads off it to get it anywhere.

It's just the engine noise then. As much as I love the K Series engine, it's not really suited to the Freelander. The Freelander is too heavy and to unairodynamic for the engine. The K is also noisier than some engines due to its all alloy construction. Is your 1.8 a base model? I believe the base Freelander had less sound proofing to reduce costs but I could be thinking about Rover cars on that one.

Nopes it's an SE, pretty much in the top end of the range. Shame it was wasted on this engine. If I don't end up selling it, it won't be my daily anyway so it might become a mule for a 220 turbo conversion or something. That would be fun.

If you keep the 4X4!! Are you not going to L series it now? That would be interesting especially as the MG boys are getting 160 BHP and nearly 300 ftlb of torque out of them now!!

We'll see, keeping the 4x4 is the tricky part as you know . L series conversion would present its own challenges. Need to sort the disco first .

noise wise mine seems fine not as noisy as my van any way
rev range is fine 3000rpm at 73mph same as many other cars of that engine size
what i find is driving it from driving my van at 70 i think i am doing 50 and think the engine is over revving have to look at the speedo to confirm my speed
the engine has plenty of power when i need it in 5th up hill is no problem

With vehicle noise, it's a case of what you are used to and what you are comparing it against.
My V6 is much quieter than my old 1.8 Freelander, however my V6 is noisy compared to my wife's 9 month old Astra GTC!!

you could put the 5th gear off a diesel box into your petrol box (not sure if they will fit just an idea ) or get bigger wheels

I thought it was just me but obviously it isnt! mine is tremendously loud at times and now that the clutch release bearing is making a noise its a pleasure to get out of it on some mornings after driving in stop start traffic. If I drive it really slow and sedately its not so bad and although I,m no boy racer I have to keep up with the traffic flow!

Mine not overly noisy but have to agree with high rpm , my car seems at its happiest when its in 4th and 5th seems to scream in pain when in 1st or 2nd

The K4 doesn't have a particularly nice sound track either.
I don't mind hearing my V6 as it sounds, better with a lovely growl.
