i have survived for quite a few months with only the odd check in - was all going well until...

was loading a trailer with rubble today, then heard pshhhhhh... the air hose had popped out of the rear left spring. i replaced the springs about 3 years ago, and have never had a problem since. now i cant get the hose back into the hole. i've got it partially in, but it is still leaking.

i have to get to work in the morning, how long do you get when its inflating before it goes into hard fault mode? its only 7 miles to work. a couple of months ago i made it home with a burst front airbag by stopping every mile to mile and a half - planning to do the same tomorrow then get it into the specialists close to work

cheers,
shane

How long is a piece of string, thing to do is fix the leak. Compressor running all the time will see it pack up on you. Don't stop just get to where your going stopping won't do any good just prolong the work the compressor is doing.

sounds like the cullet has given up the ghost. check that its complete and if it is cinsidder cutting 20mm off the air hose if you have the slack.

Cutting 20mm off the air hose is not a good idea as there is a raised collar moulded into the air hose that will prevent it going in. 2 to 5 mm is the maximum that can be cut off assuming that it has not previously been cut.

Thanks guys.

The raised collar is still there, along with the little red rubber-type collar around the pipe. The collet seems to be intact, but it's such a fiddly wee bugger that i cant get it pushed in any further. might try cutting off a few mm later, but don't think it will help me pushing it in. On top of it all, my locking wheel nut key decided to self destruct and i cant get the wheel off, which would at least make access a bit easier!

Am i going to need a new air spring?

Smear the end of the pipe with silicone grease or washing up liquid and hold the pipe with forceps or very long nosed pliers and push hard:)

try chamfering the pipe end with a pencil sharpener, dont go mad with it.if your having a problem getting it right in then ask our female posters to help(come on ladyranger) he needs some hints.

tried again tonight, but just can't get the damn thing in...!

i can see into the collet and it all looks ok, but just won't push in. anyone ever heard of it happening before? do i need to just bite the bullet and buy a new air spring? or will i just have the same problem

it was definitey easier when i replaced the springs three years ago

no, tried rounding over the edges a little with the only tools i had (long nose pliers) but now the car is stranded at my work. got in this morning, but borrowed a work vehicle, so i'll try something tomorrow night. i'm pushing the hose that hard it is kinking, always in the same place too so i'm wondering am i just going to split the hose!!

thinking tomorrow night i'll try take the spring out altogether and try pushing the pipe in and see if it is ever going to work. if not, then just buy a new air spring...

more bloody money. anyone wanna buy a black p38 4.0 HSE, everything working except a 3mm diameter pipe which has crippled the whole damn car??

Why buy an airspring for the cost of a thirty pence collar and a couple of O rings.

can they be repaired? i didn't realise they could with being so bloody small and fiddly. i'm gonna get the air spring out tomorrow evening, then i'll sort out getting it repaired.

at last some possible light at the end...

Yes the collar just pulls out there should be two O rings behind it.

no, i'll not be inflating anything for a day or two. got the spring out this morning, definitely missing the outside collet. still looks like the o rings are intact though. At least i can see one of them.

Got new collet coming over from P38spares. Rang around everyone over here and nobody either did them or even knew who would have them. Reckon a few people thought i was talking a different language, and no-one has ever heard of a car with air suspension...
