I have a light bar on the roof of my Disco 300 tdi. The previous owner had put them on but they are operated by a switch in dash. How hard is it to rewire them to come on with main beam as well? whats involved? i want the option to put just the light bar on via the switch and also for it to come on/off with main beam

its illegal to use those type of lights on any highway so wireing them to the main beam is not a good idea i would leave them as they are to be honest

I think you are ok with full beam if you can adjust them.

As robint says it's illegal to use em on the highway however.

I have mine switched so they either come on with main beam or not.

You just wire up the relay to be switched by main beam simples.

N.B. Use their own switchable power source and fuse ;)

thats what i said in me first answer (reading between the lines ):D:D:D

I think I can see what ya mean ....................... :)

But he asked if it were simple to wire to your main beam and the answer is yes.

He just has to be aware it's illegal to use them on the highway. As you said without reading between the lines :D

Read 'em and weep...

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/schedule/5/made

"PART IIRequirements relating to optional main-beam headlamps

Any number may be fitted and the only requirements prescribed by these Regulations in respect of any which are fitted are those specified in paragraphs 7, 10 and 12(a) of Part I and, in the case of a motor vehicle first used on or after 1st April 1991, paragraph 5 of Part I."

Para 7 - "Colour: White or yellow"

Para 10 - "10. Electrical connections–

(a) Every main-beam headlamp shall be so constructed that the light emitted therefrom–

(i)can be deflected at the will of the driver to become a dipped beam, or

(ii)can be extinguished by the operation of a device which at the same time either–

(A)causes the lamp to emit a dipped beam, or

(B)causes another lamp to emit a dipped beam.

(b) Where a matched pair of main-beam headlamps is fitted they shall be capable of being switched on and off simultaneously and not otherwise."

Para 12a -"12. Other requirements–

(a) Every main-beam headlamp shall be so constructed that the direction of the beam of light emitted therefrom can be adjusted whilst the vehicle is stationary."

So what is illegal abnout spots that can be adjusted, will switch off when full beam switches off, are white etc.

*sigh*

MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - hand brake control valves

Note: The precise position of headlamps is not part of the inspection, but check visually that the lamps are at about the same height and the same distance from each side of the vehicle

And from my previous link...

"2. Position–
(a) Longitudinal: No requirement

(b) Lateral–
(i)Where two main-beam headlamps are required to be fitted–
(A)Maximum distance from the side of the vehicle:
The outer edges of the illuminated areas must in no case be closer to the side of the vehicle than the outer edges of the illuminated areas of the obligatory dipped-beam headlamps.
(B)Maximum separation distance between a pair of main-beam headlamps:
No requirement
(ii)Where one main-beam headlamp is required to be fitted:

(i)On the centre-line of the motor vehicle (disregarding any sidecar forming part of a motor bicycle combination), or

(ii)At any distance from the side of the vehicle (disregarding any sidecar forming part of a motor bicycle combination) provided that a duplicate lamp is fitted on the other side so that together they form a matched pair. In such a case, both lamps shall be treated as obligatory lamps.

(c) Vertical:
No requirement"

HTH

Just had a word with my local MOT tester: Additional lights are not part of the MOT so will pass, doesn`t mean they are legal though! Similarly a bald spare tyre will pass an MOT but Police can give you 3 points, reverse light is not part of the MOT but Police can still pull you for it.

He said they only use a small part of the Road Traffic Act whereas Police use all of it.
