How hard is it to change a sump gasket??

Got a leak and not sure whether to take it to the garage or go at it myself? Anyone done it and how long did it take. I would be using axle stands on my drive. Have already looked at the discovery2 site but not sure how hard. I have replaced air springs, injector harness and that sort of thing. Is it much harder than that?

Yep its easy. I just followed the discovery 2 pictures which explained it very well. Key is having everything you need. Hardest bit was wiggling the sump out to clean it and fit gasket. I also replaced the oil pump bolt when I was at it as you cant take any chances with that failing. I took my time and did it in around 5 hours and changed all oil filters as well of course.

I did mine as well and found it very awkward. I jacked the front of the car up to let the suspension extend fully. I used the discovery2 site for instructions and this helped alot. Lining up the new gasket was trickey as was getting the actual sump back into place. I noticed the power steering tube almost chaffed through on the sump, so sorted that and did the oil pump bolt.

Does the discovery2 site say to remove the cross member? I wasn't able to as I siezed some of the nuts, but this didn't matter as there was enough room.

The most difficult thing was lying under the car to do this. If the car was raised it would have been much easier. I remember my local Independant saying they would have charged me an hours labour for this on top of the oil, gasket filter etc, so with hindsight that might of been an alternative. Still pretty satisfied I managed it and didn't bugger up the car

Yep as Andy says the lying under the car is a pain also >I sheared off one of the bolts on the cross member when I was removing it so give it a good soaking with WD for a week or so before trying it. As I said earlier it is awkward to get the sump out and especially back in as you are trying your best not to dislodge rust and dirt back into your nice clean sump and gaskets. I did stick a 3rd axle jack under the tow bar incase the suspension dropped while I was under it. Very satisfying when the are now no drips and new oil pump bolt is secure.
