Not because im thinking of fitting one, I'm just curious. Could anyone explain from start to finish how, for example a PTO operated winch, is fitted and how it works. Ta muchly :D

Be betterer oft fitting a drybollic winch because the Fender ain't geared up to have a PTO fitted!

You would need holes through the cross members to take the drive shaft same as they has on the Series, then you would need to fit all the PTO control gear to the gearbox, and cut some slots in the floor for the lever thingies, and then you would need to fit a winch base plate onto your bumper, and then you would need to fins=d a winch that will sit on the base without having to cut half of your rad out to amke room for the shaft, and then ... and then ... Sod it I can't be arsed any more with a 'whatif' who has no intention of fitting one!!

Defender are geared up for pto driven winches. The pto goes behind the "pto cover plate" end of the transfer box and this unit has a propshaft flange facing forward the unit does hang down slightly. A propshaft runs forward by the side of the engine and up to the mechanical pto or mechanically driven winch.

Often used in utility 110's and 90's

One stands most humbly corrected, Jai.

Just going by what I was told a few years ago before fitting an hydraulic capstan winch.

Not that common must be said but beaker has one.

One of he guys from "another forum" has cut n shut old tranny box and made one and sells kits to have a rearward facing pto.

The easier fit is a hydraulic winch driven from hyd pto pump , gives the ability to just hold a pull rather than in or out like a mech or electric winch . You can get very exact control .
A series hyd winch will mod to fit a defender quite easily , just need the different lt230 pto adapter .
method of operation , is select neutral in transfer box , engage pto pump select drive gear to suit speed of operation , set throttle for engine speed , let out clutch control winch in or out by spool valve. HTSH

The pto is activated by pulling a lever on the seat box near the bulkhead. In the case of the shaft driven winch used in static operation the transfer box is in neutral. In driving applications the transfer box is in low range. The pto uses the main gearbox and clutch so has five forward and one reverse speed.

The hydraulic winch systems are pump driven instead utilising a hydraulic motor which is similar in theory to a car water pump.

An electro hydraulic pump of a spec lift, tail lift or tipper can be used instead of a pto.
