How do you test

if you turn engine over while you get someone to put thier tongue on each lead in turn, you should hear a screech, if you dont then thats the coil pack dead! or maybe your helper but we'll worry about that later!

i'm sure someone will come along soon and suggest looking here Ignition Coils or even a method that is even easier on a p38!

Hey Gav
I'm chasing the same problem, a misfire has cost me an mot fail today and I've identified the fault being no or a very very weak spark at plug 1 (used some natty little lead testers from Halfrauds for 8 squid)

What's puzzling me is that the same coil powers cyl 6 and that's as fit as a butchers.

I've swapped leads to check and it's fine, as is the tester on another cyl.

is this possible??

cheers

Not sure about teh set up on a p38 but on a jag s type we just took each coil pack off and then ran the engine. if there is no difference in engine sound when you remove one thats the dead one. turned out to be all 6 on the way out. Not a very scientific test but it should work
