How do I replace my rear main oil seal please?

Hello all :D

I have a 91 disco 3.5, and I currently have the gearbox out for repair :(

The rear main seal needs doing whilst I'm here but I don't know where to start!

A walk through would be really great,

Hi Noisy....Its very easy to do.

1..........Remove bolts from the clutch cover and remove cover and drive plate

2..........Remove bolts from flywheel and remove flywheel...remember flywheel is heavy so watch your fingers

3.........Drain engine oil

4.........note location of the seal in reference to the housing..depth it is fitted to,recessed into the housing

5........prize out the seal CAREFULLY with a very small screwdriver or angled scribe.

6........Thoroughly clean out the recess in the seal housing( i used brake cleaner on a cloth)

7........NEW SEAL IS FITTED DRY.......Align the new seal over the rear of the crank taking care not to damage the inside face of the seal. . I cut an empty plastic milk container and made a guide which fitted snuggly over the crankshaft.

8.......Gently push the seal into the housing equally so the seal sits square.Push into the housing to the same depth as the old one was.

9.......Check that the seal is sitting squre,check depth is equal all of the way round the seal

10......remove plastic container guide

11......refit flywheel and bolts

12......refit clutch plate,cover and bolts

13......Refill engine oil

You are welcome mate....Just make sure everything is clean......I usually spray the rear main oil seal housing with lashings of brake cleaner to get the rear of the engine clean before i remove the old seal,it just gets rid of all of the oil and gunge.

I love a good clean and scrub job, gradually working throughthe whole car stripping down and rebuilding the lot, the gearbox is the only thing I don't fancy tackling tbh.

Anyway yeah it'll all be minted up before it goes back together!

Once the transfer box is scrubbed up and the gearbox recon'd it'll be mint underneath, leaving me with just the boot floor and my biggest ambition, overhauling the engine.

Yummm, clean internals :D
 
Urm, Dave, the Haynes manual says to remove the rear main bearing cap to change the seal on a v8...

Did you find this not necessary or??

Hi Noisy, It was a while ago when i last did one,so will double check on Rave and get back to you.

Have double checked Rave and there is no reason to remove rear bearing end cap. The seal is a simple pull out and push fit in new one.

be sure it is not the rear main "T" seals leaking which will need the sump and the rear main cap removing too
 
WELL

when I got in there, the side seals looked a bit shaky (some missing) so I decided to take the cap off and replace them.

They're arriving today so will throw them in tonight.

Hoping to have it back together, clutch on and waiting for gearbox by the end of the night.

Should be fine :D

are you sure you really need to even new one may leak a little ,but it needs engine or gear box out and flywheel removing
