The viscous is a left hand thread NOT a right hand thread (cept for TD5's:eek: ). Use a viscous spanner 32mm. You may have holes in the pulley to insert a tommy bar or similar to hold it still. If not hit the spanner with a hammer to shock it off. You can also use a hammer and chisel but It will leave marks on the nut. A viscous spanner is better.

Hammer and chisel? Easy Ratty, ya din't need to go in that hard. Not till all else fails.

I found best way is use 1 1/4" spanner and a long screwdriver. Use the screwdriver as a lever on the nuts securing the pulley and stop it turning. Then shock the spanner but like Ratty said it is LEFT HAND THREAD.

If that doesn't work, get a longer pry bar or similar (can be a piece of bar or timber), lock the bar in place by wedging between the chassis rail and one of the pulley bolts then give the spanner a sharp belt with Land Rover tool No.1

Once its loose be careful not to drop the fan into the rad coz it will put a hole in it and a new rad will cost ya.

Hope that helps.

just checked the fred and the reply i put up yesterday isn't here:confused:  i haven't had a chance to get it off yet, oooher,:) i was going to do it wednesday night after replacing me swivel balls and a few other bits, i was just finishing off when the rusty ass front brake pipes decided they didn't like the taste of brake fluid any more  spent the rest of me time and last night trying to get what was left of em off and make new ones up:( hopefully i'll get a chance on monday night as long as the brakes bleed up ok!)

It all depends if it's a Serpentine belt or old fashioned V belt. If it's got a Serpentine belt, it's a RIGHT hand thread, as my brother found out when he was trying to get mine off. Chisel and large hammer did it in the end, but it was a bugger, as he'd been tightening it up before he found out.

it's a 4 belt jobbie not a serpentine, just opened the bag of belts up and realised i got the wrong alternator belt:mad: i need a ribbed one. ooh er:D still haven't got round to it yet coz every time i try to fix something something else falls off:mad:  just finished making new front brake pipes up so gotta bleed it all up now should be done by bed time:D

Vissy spanner, bit of bar over the end, and a universal fine adjustment tool.

Gonna do mine when I can get my hands on a spanner.
