Classic How can I determine how much my RRC was lifted?

Hi there,

the weather is getting better and I have to get things going again. So I thought of doing something fun, replacing the brake hoses with Goodridge ones and putting some cool Koni shocks in. Some tunning finally!

So, thing is the car is definitely lifted. Old invoices say 5 cm. BUT I got spare springs, so I am at quite a loss now by how much it is lifted.

I thought of measuring the distance between wheel hub and lower edge of the outer wings. Would that be feasible? And if yes, what would the original spec dimension be? If it helps it has 235/85R16 wheel fitted.

Go around a sharp corner quickly, how easily it tips over onto it's side gives and indication of how far it is lifted.

I might even give it a try if it was road worthy at the moment! But without seats and seatbelts the indication would be more accurate, wouldn't it?

There will be measurements centre of hub to wheel arch i imagine. One of the classic lads will be along to tell you what they should be i am sure.

That's what I hoped for... I went through all the docs and books I have and didn't come up with anything... Would be a pain to order two inch stuff just to find out the lift kit was thrown out a couple of years back or something like that!

And if not, I'll revert to your plan B! Always liked destrutive testing!

Just done a Google search and a thread from on here turned up. Apparently height from centre of hub to wheel arch is quoted as 450 mm. But think that was standard on air. Can't see the coil one being a lot different.

You may find if your suspension is old, your lifted coils/struts do not lift as much as when new due to age. Something to bare in mind when measuring

Why would it matter
You bought it
So I would think it didn’t matter what the lift is

Yeah, two inch is what I suspected. Have to measure, so.

Well, it is important to know because I'm shopping for new shocks and brake hoses. Not that I snap the standard length the first time I go off-road or something.

If you use the 450 mm as standard, not forgetting that ride height can vary plus or minus 7 mm new. Anything grossly above 457 mm will be lift.

I'll happily measure my standard (genuine parts suspension, renewed relatively recently in terms of mileage) maybe tomorrow as car is not parked at home.

OY YOU, I resemble that remark.
Well just for a change Buttercup is mostly all as nature intended (ie - better than when she left the factory - in my opinion anyway) except for the air-con not working, the scabby alloys that were going to be sorted last year, a split on the A frame ball joint boot, tired body rubber mountings, a lazy door lock actuator, a ----------- ------------- ------------- well what can I say. Work in progress.

Height

70.9 in (1,801 mm) (1970–1980)
70.1 in (1,781 mm) (1980 onwards)

The springs have a stripe painted on them which designates the lift and load increase

Thanks everyone for all the answers! Just checked yesterday, no marks on the black springs... Did measure yet, weather was fine an I finished the interior paint. But today is another day!
