How best to mount winch?

Morning All,

I've managed to get my hands on a T-max EW11000 winch, just wondered how best to mount it on my 1986 V8 90?

I'm not technical so do i need a whole new bumper or would one of these extension winch "trays" do the job?

Will I need a new/additional battery of a certain type?

Sorry for my ignorance and thanks for any help/advice.
 
From what I've seen the winch trays are good, but they mess up your 'approach angle'. Saying that, some of the winch bumpers do that on their own.

What are other's opinions on the slimline style winch bumpers?
 
Thanks for replying. I had a look at a 9o with a Warn winch the other day and they had to cut the grill out etc to fit around it.

I was hoping that using a winch tray might negate the need for drastic work on the car and be easier to swap off again if needs be.
 
Mr V. Define slimline? are you talking the likes of D44, Cheviot4x4 etc.

Most popular are the style sold by mm 4x4. allmakes now do a similar model. I had one from Gardian offroad which was good. depends what your using it for and what you want to achieve.

With a 11k winch I would be very carefull with a tray mount on a standard bumper. Does the tray bolt into the chassis rails at all? or is it only bolted to the bumper? A winch pulling hard will twist a standard bumper off its mounts... the last thing you need when your really stuck.

I would be looking at replacing the bumper.

I have an ARB bumper. very heavy, has reduced my approach angle but gives unpresidented protection to the front of my 90. Ive hit a dog at 30mph and written off a Rover Metro with it to date :D

I suppose I mean the ones that need the grill cut out to mount the winch, rather than have it sticking right out in front, which, from what I've seen (not trying to be an expert, just observations) seems to screw up the approach angle, and just digs in worse than the 'plough' that hangs off the back of most disco's.

Also Bazza, winch bumpers normally have built in recovery points as a bonus, which is another reason I wouldn't go for the tray.
 
The tray i've looked at does bolt onto the end of the chassis rails. The only reason i've gone for such a big winch is that it was too cheap not to.

Looks like a new bumper then, anything else I have to be aware of?

thats what I thought you meant, just checking :) the D44/cheviot/gardian ones mount high up on the chassis ends giving excellent clearence, but you do have to trim your grill and rad panel. With the D44 bumper you have to trim your chassis ends! :eek: I nearly went for one of these, but decided on the ARB as it suited my needs better. I managed to improve the angle slightly but cutting it back and re drilling the mount holes. managed to get it back by another 2.5 inches :) with the 33" tyres and 2" lift, i can get past most things with it.

Depends how often you use it. if its only now and again, it will be fine. just take a rest between long pulls if your using it lots, especially when really stuck.

no worries. IF you get the chance of a 2nd battery, you can link them together. I dont think you need the intelligence of a split charge system if your only using the winch. If you start adding other items then maybe consider it but for what you propose a single battery or 2 together will be fine. try it and see how you get on.

All thats left then is a couple of rozzers, preferably in their motor.
 
maybe not..but its imported cheap stuff..compared to warn/superwinch stuff..
my warn xd9000i has been on nearly 2 years it gets dunked alot and used an awfull lot and has never let me down.the only thing i changed was the solenoids to an albrite one,just cos there better and easier to connect ext switches too.
yes the warn wasnt cheap but you pay for what you get with winches.

you are right though, cheaply made winches won't last the extreme riggers of proper off roading

the shop replaced mine for free as the first two times i'd needed mine it had broke, but that only got me a 9500LBS champion winch,

will become my rear winch when i buy a real one :p
