Theres a loud howling noise coming from my freelander 1.8i when i go about 60mph uphill.

the front o/s wheel get red hot? is this a bearing and is this related to the howling sound? its a very very loud howling sound.

no its probably a temperture change causing the molecules to glow warmly. the hoooin sound might be a trapped werewolf but i suspect yer got a brake seized on causing both woolling niose and hot wheel

funny you should say the one brake pad is metal to metal. gonna change tem tomorrow.

never had a freelander before but what i have noticed is that if im on the motorway and put the clucth down it slows very quickly. this prob corrosponds with what you are saying regarding a brake stuck on.

a bearing noise is normally constant and the way i check it is either jack it up and spin the wheel listening for the noise which is the most obvious one or when driving put it from left to right and when the pressure is taken off the wheel the noise should go if that makes sense but maybe your brakes sticking on if your wheel is getting hot just jack it up and try spin the wheel

what i have said on previous post is that the wheel doesnt spin. itgoes forward about 6 inches then stops.

would this make sense if the brake was sligtly stuck on?

Is it anything to do with your man Howell?
I'd go with dodgey pads and a warped disc.
Changed my pads yesterday, half an hour did it, although if you havent changed them before then allow yourself a bit longer. ABS or non ABS?

abs. do i need to know anything.

this howling noise im refering to does stop when i apply the breaks. does thi mean a bearing or brakes?

Is there any play in the wheel? If its ABS then you'll need the wind back tool, a G-clamp can be used on non ABS. Dont forget to loosen cap on hydraulic reservoir or you'll bust the piston seals, when winding back.

think its abs - discs on front and drums on back. how do i tell

If its ABS, then open the bonnet, there will be a huge aluminium block from where all the brake pipes come out of, with a hefty wiring loom attached as well.

Non ABS just has a small 4 way connector, just the way I like it, simple but effective

I've used a G-Clamp to do my ABS equipped brakes - simply removed the reservoir cap and worked perfectly.

Check that the caliper slides freely on its mountings - the guide pins could be corroded / sticking and causing the brake on one side to bind. Also visually inspect the rubber boots - may have split to allow dirt / water ingress.

Reagrds,

Check your brake rotor, if it is blue or scored or has a high front edge you have a brake pad problem. Brake piston could be hung up, in that case have a pro do a break replacement and check the tolerance on the rotor for replacement.
