Ok we all know how bad the Defender heater is. Had (I think) a bright idea. Why not take some of that ally flexible hose about 75mm dia, clamp it next to the turbo (luverly and hot) and then feed it into the heater box air intake? Get nice warm air to defrost screen and driver. It would need a blanking plate or panel that closed off the wing air intake, but seems to me a good idea needing to happen, esp in the current climate. Unless of course someone makes a kit and I can go out and buy one??;)
 
wot a brill idea - pity peeps used to do summat similar about 30 years ago - the air intake had a nozzle on the end and was turned forward for summer and down towards exhaust pipe for winter :d.

I guess the question is, where is the problem - we know that there is one for sure..

a, Is the problem that the heater matrix does not get hot enough in the box to heat the air.
b, Is there not enough natural air flow to allow air through the matrix and on
c, Is the fan the problem

Just making the box inside hotter may not be enough - for sure there are safety issues!
 
I got cold last winter - so I decided to do something about it. My 1989 110 has a 300TDi engine - but the original heater.

After making my alterations I now find the heater HOT and actually have to turn it down. And yes, I get air coming in round the doors and through the badly fitting air flaps. So warm WITH ventilation!

What did I do?

1. New thermostat - one that opened at a higher temperature.
2. Later heater. You can spot the earlier ones as they have metal water pipes that are angled down. The newer heaters have a bigger matrix and a more efficient - you can spot them as they have plastic water pipes which are horizontal rather than pointing down.
3. I cleaned out the air inlet - it had moss, leaves and other rubbish in it.

I bought the newer heater for around £60 on Ebay.

It was worth every penny!
