Hi folks, is it natural for a series 111 exhaust to get red hot after a couple of miles or is this normal?

Don't think do. Mine doesn't. I have no idea what would cause that I'm afraid but it certainly isn't normal.

Ah, could be serious then! best I put them new spanners to use and do a compression check along with the timing etc......

It was, brought a new carb and elec ignition, fitted those, went a bit better but the down pipe gets red hot. Ive used a colourtune to check its mixture and that seems ok. can only think I may have a burnt exhaust valve?

When you say red hot do you mean the metal is actually red or just very fing hot to touch ??

I don't think I'd like to touch it, feel hot and smells hot! Checked timing ok, compression test all read the same even tho they only read 125 instead of 145 but god only knows how old the gauge is! But what I did notice was that the new inline fuel filter is alway empty, manually primed the thing and the fuel pump only squibed fuel in now and again! Ordered a new pump! I knew I'd learn to love these new spanners lol

For a petrol engine the exhaust manifold temperature would be between 450C at idle and 600C under full load, and for a diesel between 350C and 500C if they are running correctly.

These are only for guidance as they relate to marine engines and are measured before the exhaust cooling system.

Basically, they get FN hot!! :D:D

Hi Folks
Can anyone tell me if their is any fuel filters between the petrol tank and the fuel pump other than the sediment bowl?

should be a wire gauze filter on the bottom of the tank pick up pipe.
after market in line filters rarely fill up completely
if the down pipe isnt visibly red, then wouldnt worry.
if it is, check timing as already said.

I'd recheck your timing, retarded timing makes the pipe HOT! Nice warm feet for the passenger but...

If you're using one of those halfords timing guns try borrowing another mine was about 10-15 degrees out until I swapped it for another which I checked against static!
