Hi Guys just bought a disco 3 got a great deal on it do`s need some work on it timing belts which are being done as I wright this blog but thing that I didn't know about which need done are both front door locks will not remote lock but will remote unlock what do u guys think ??? fuel gauge when full only shows half tank ??? fuel range works ok Still have my TD5 just now hoping the disco 3 is not a mistake
 
Once you have your niggles sorted you will love it mate!! Make sure you do ALL of your oils, engine, gearbox, diffs and transfer case, at least you know those basics are done. I have had mine a month and engine oil is done, fuel filter and had a gearbox megaflush. Next payday is diffs and transfer box!!
 
Once you have your niggles sorted then you will enjoy the next batch of niggles and so on, the joys of a D3!
 
The only methods ive heard of changing it DIY is turning the engine on with one of the oil cooler pipes off for about a minute, shutting it off and then forcing new fluid down the pipe with a pump.

I don't advise this !!
 
Its true the gearbox oil is for life.

The box in question is the ZF 6HP26 and it is this box which is used in Disco III; Jaguar S-type, XJ and XF; various BMW and Mercedes models plus some American cars as well.

The car manufacturers & ZF used to say that the 'box was "sealed for life" on all the above models. This was due to a desire to reduce printed maintenance costs. Now they say change the oil every 60,000mls.

I do not believe for one moment that it is impossible to change the autobox oil on a DIII without lifting the body - not for a second !

It's the same 'box in the S-type and I have changed the oil on those without any problems at all. It really narks me when I read such misinformation.

I don't advise this !!

It is quite feasible and straightforward to disconnect both autobox oil pipes, connect flexible pipes to the flow and return with the flow pipe ending in a large enough catch tank to take the full capacity (6ltrs on the HP26 from memory) and with the flow pipe end in a container of new oil with 6 ltrs of Dexron 6 or ZF's own fluid. This container should be higher than the gearbox.

When you start the engine, the gearbox oil pump will be engaged and start to pump out the old oil and suck in the new stuff. You need to watch carefully when the older dark oil is all out and the new oil is all in the box. As soon as this has happened, turn off the motor. Now re-fit pipes, test the level (with the engine running and having selected all gearbox positions, then back to P) via the level/fill plug and top as neccesary

indeed you can get machines to do such but your method is cheaper

Indeed mate, with the size of my pockets I always look for a DIAH (do it at home) method.

And it works. Done it a few times with TDi 300 autos. Dead easy to disconnect the in & out pipes from the 'box and fasten those bathroom style ss flexy pipes on it - and Robert is your Mums best friend !
