Hi i am looking at getting a range and woukd like to know what the diffrent engines will give on a hones MPG.
4.0 =
4.6 =
the diesel =

Ta Matty.

Hi Mate
Have got a 2.5 DSE 96 and a 2.5 DHSE 98..
The 2.5 DHSE does 21-22 round town and 29-30 on a run
The 2.5 DSE is Chipped (absolute must! as makes it drive like a petrol) and it returns 23-24 round town and 31-32 on a run...

Am toying with Cooking Oil as well .. Have run 2 full tanks..The 1st 80/20 derv and the second 70/30...Have noticed no smell,no lack of performance,no trouble starting and exact same MPG...

The mileage i do,,dont know if its worth messing about, but for higher mileage motors???

Gives you 3 options! Hope it helps..

hiya matty i dont know about the diesels but i have owned both a 4.0 se and my present 4.6hse and tbh i dont thnik there is much difference between the two as far as mpg is concerned on average its about 18/19 which i feel aint bad going off what other owners say , the mpg on lpg is about the same on my 4.6 but at 36p per litre its smiles better :) :) :) ( sorry about the pun ) seriously though personally i would not touch a diesel with a barge pole , when you consider the only benifits are fuel economy my 4.6 has all the toys ect and i feel will give any diesel a run for its money £ for £ .
i have no doubt that all the diesel owners will now jump to the defence of thier vehicles now  :) .

hi,

i've had my DHSE for about two months now (and its only my first RR). i get about 24 - 27 urban (daily commute of city and fast a-road) on a long trip (london-scotland) i got about 29mpg. its not chipped yet, but i have been told to chip it and get an intercooler for better performance and mpg

Chips a must mate..Is a total difference driving experience from the standard 2.5.. Makes it a pleasure to drive + 1-2 MPG....Not sure on the intercooler.Have heard good things, but think they are dear?

Im getting 19.3 out of my 4.6 thats a combined figure, i agre with rick071155 but it also depends on what you wil use the car for ?. The petrol is a bit juicy but i dont see the point in buying a car for its ecomany, you buy it because you want it and love it and sod how much it costs to run, repair and service.

LTEL,

what chip do you recommend? there appear to be a few on the market. someone on the forum last week said that when BMW 'gave' the 2.5 engine to landrover, they downrated it by fitting a 'lesser' chip. do you know if there is any truth in this? perhaps i need to find a BMW chip.

the intercooler thing was recommended by Titch at North East 4x4. they are landrover specialists in Banchory, Scotland, who i can definately recommend. i think he said it would be about £800 for the chip and the intercooler

It was me who said that, 3 people told me that same story, but i’m not that tecky enough to know if its the truth or not, now i don’t know (or pretend to know) about BMWs etc, but if the gear box isn’t a BMW one and has different ratios etc, would a BMW chip do the same job as a Land Rover one? the Landy weighs a heck of a lot more than a car, so will (i’m supposing) use different ratios for the gearing? but this is all guess work, but it kida makes sense though don’t you think? i can see where your coming from though, find a scrappy BMW and take the chip out and swap it over, when i had my chip done it took 3 mins to put in, its a very easy job, but it needed an extra piece on it to make it fit (an adapter) it went under the bonnet (nr the battery) in the ECU

This is the BMW that the same engine went in to, (there could be others)

Company Name: BMW Model No: 525 Engine Size: 2.5 TDS Fuel Type: TDS Transmission: M/A Year From: 9/92 Year To: 4/97

If you are fitting chips just go with the after market, rather than trying to bodge a bm chip into a range. All the reserch and fuel setting have been set up on a after market chip. There will be a vast differance between the bmw chip compared to after market, just spend the money and its done or try to save money and you are done and walking.

Thanks for the comments lads, on a LPG convertion do you lose alot of boot space for the tanks.
And when i go and look at a moter what are the main things to look out for, i am very good with cars but have never come across RR's before so i would like to know what are the main things to keep a eye out for.

Ta Matty.

if it has a doughnut tank in spare wheel well which is popular with rangerovers you will lose no boot space at all , unless you carry the spare in the boot that is :) .
as far as what to look for take along someone who knows these cars that way you should avoid any lemons ( of which there are a few ) i dont want to put you off but an experianced guy should spot the bad ones for you .

Hi
I bought a 4.6 HSE for myself and my wife has nicked it as her 2.5 300 TDi LSE classic had a problem that I could not solve and she would not drive my Classic SE 300 TDi as it was a works car instead of a van so I have bought her a DSE. She still wont give me back the 4.6 so I now drive the DSE. As for mpg the 4.6 does 12 - 14 round town 18 - 20 on a run the DSE has been doing 20mpg but should do more now that I have sorted the fuel problem.

Hope this helps Craig

Hiya I have the BMW 2.5 re-mapped chip & intercooler up-grade it certainly makes a difference both on performance and economy

I do as mentioned previously about a manchester to london & back run each week.

the route is quite hilly and last evening i was getting a ave 6.7 Lts per 100kms (ehicich acourding to the link below)
MPG to l/100km Converter is 35MPG this was running at 120KPH on cruise
i know on the flat at the same speed i was getting a ave of 6.0 Ltrs per 100KMS which hold on is 39MPG and in some case lower

prior to this on the same run i was getting 10-10.2 (23-24 MPG)

in my case certainly makes the diff
next week i start to run it on Pump Bio Diesel (.99 euro cent a ltr)
our other vehicles run on EN 14 214 (which should see the running csts drop that little bit more.

happy trails

Abe:)

Hi Abe, Do you know what chip your car has- there seem to be a few on the market? also, where did you get the intercooler? if you're getting 35 - 39 mpg that sounds impressive.
Will

Abe, thanks very much for the info on the chip and intercooler. i will have to start saving my pennies. An independant 4x4 place near me said about £800 for fitting a chip and intercooler though i'm not sure what it involved or which chip and intercooler was to be used. i think i'll start saving up - the DHSE is great but it could do with a little more acceleration.
Will

Hiya Will

I have noticed you can get it done cheaper in my case I wouldnt be able to "pop round" if there were any issues.

in the past I had used Fern`s as he knows his stuf and gives really good advice

well until you chip-up

happy Trails

Abe

Have you thought about replacing the viscus fan with an electric job they claim 7-9% inprovement in power / economy for a investment of around 120 quid for a true 17 inch kenlowe

will look from my side whats involved (special spanners etc) i wouldnt imagine so
(stop press) no fan is just a four bolt jobe viscus unit satys in place

just a thought

happy trails

Abe

I have a 2.5dhse which has had the ecu re mapped at a price of a bit under £300. Towing my caravan to yorkshire from Liverpool the rangey returned apprx. 29 mpg, this was taking it easy about 58 mph all the way. Figures courtesey of the onboard fuel computer the accuracey of which I do not know.
No caravan on and general running around returned MPG 37. Next item to be changed will be the power hungry sticking viscous fan.
