Homemade roll cage anyone?

After looking at the price of cages for my king cab 90 ive found a couple of things,


A finding one for a king cab is impossible and
B they are fooking expensive..


And as I wont be using my 90 in competitions or anything too major I was just wondering if it would be worth attempting making my own roll cage, As it would be more of a show cage....

As anyone tried this before and made a not too shabby job?

I was wondering if it is worth having a go...

i ment to message you earlier, do you know where or who i could speak to in order to order a new end plate for that super winch EP9?..

Ill get one ordered soon as i can find a suitable match, also which end is it? motor or gearbox?



back on subject, its my 25th in jan so i might treat myself to a pipe bender and just get hold of some mild steel tube and have a good bash at it..
 
I'm a pipe welder by trade and a 6meter length on 60mm pipe 6mm thick is £30 a length you can buy 90 45 and tees from most steel company's and there a few quid each so you won't have to bend the pipe. Or you could measure everything up and have the hollow tube bent to the sizes you won't but it's quite pricey
 
Forget joints bends it needs to be one length of pipe.

the link above is a good starting point. A King cab depending how large the rear section is will never meet regs as the main hoop should be as close as possible to the drivers back but that said if I was in an accident be sure the cage is built properly. Ive seen a cage in bits where the guy rolled and his welds broke and ripped the car to bits. Follow the specs and just move the rear hoop rearward and you shouldn't be far off
 
P.s when you say homemade there is noting wrong with bending your own spitfiremk1uk has made many a comp motor with a trusty hydraulic pipe bender. If its built to spec its perfectly certifiable for comps and such like

Jai, its more for looks to be honest mate, I go out in my truck once every two months if that, I can't justify buying one nor can i hide it from the mrs so thats out the window..

I planned on finding a cheap one for a van side one and cutting it a little but atleast buying a pipe bender or having a go at it with ready bent parts would be something to take some time off my hands..


What thickness tube would you suggest?

Material spec is in 200's link. Personally I wouldn't bother unless its one that could be used in comps. its a lot of ballache to make your motor top heavy. Tornado do a lightbar bolt on jobbie.

I got the bends done by a bloke that builds cages with a few alterations did all the welding and mounts myself. Think its 3.2 mm cds 50mm from memory with 48mm roof cross to meet ultra 4 regs. If I had a mandrel bender though ill do the next one myself :)

Other materials can be used but this is the best combination of lightness and strength. I can pick up the whole cage on my sholders and walk around with it so not really heavy

Id say the tube is going to be £300 at least

The most time consuming bit is notching unless youve got a proper belt sander and pillar drill set up to do it.

Do it once do it properly :)

It's motor end. It might be OK as is, but I wouldn't use it ..

I had a look on the internet and couldn't find any .. the nearest was a Superwinch Tigershark (or something like that) but it didn't look quite right, I'd want to see one and match it up to check before buying. Can't say I looked too hard to be honest.

Give us a week after New Year and I might have something for you .. ;)

Yeah, I'd probably use CDS 2.5, light, strong and to regs 'just in case' you want to start competing.

If you know you don't want to compete then blue/red stripe 3.2mm wall 'steam pipe' is a heavier alternative, but it's cheaper, easier to weld, and will bend relatively easily so can be bent back again, where a lot of cds doesn't bend so easily, especially at weld lines ... A lot of cages are basically single bent cds main hoop sections with tree guards, roof lines, joint tubes etc made from blue/red stripe for just this reason .. a bit of give where it might be needed for moving foliage/stuff. ;)
