you're doing it wrong if it wont compress the rings........or you didn't gap them so they were too large for the groove
anyway mole grips and some thin sheet steel in a cylinder with two flat pieces coming off to grab and compress on

make sure you control the release too, if you let the thing just unwind it can #### up the compressor
