Home service stumbling blocks

Been underneath the 90 recently draining and changing oils but had to stop at the gearbox as didnt have the right tool. Doing a search has shown I need a torx 55 so I`ll get one of those then can do that oil change.
Then on to the engine oil/filter - its also been said `dont bother with expensive oil/ that sold by the land rover or indies, but a 15W40 from wilcos or whoever`. Is that still the case, (cold weather coming and all that), or is it some peoples opinions that you get what you pay for and therefore put good quality oil in?

p.s. ordered the blue light dash upgrade so will let ya know when rec`d and installed as to what I think.

its a personal choice. I use Shell Helix. Not super expensive, but more than Tesco's own. Cheapest in Shell garages actually.

Personally I choose a mid range oil (not cheapest ) but change oil quite often especially engine oil which I do every 4000 miles or there abouts.Suppose this is a bit often but its only a few quid for oil and a filter if you do it yourself,I change fuel filter every other oil change. :doh:

Then throw the old oil into the tank and use it as fuel. At current prices that means you can take about £1.06 off the initial price of it because you get to use it twice!

I use top grade oil free from mate's work (scania) but in Oil in general you do get what you pay for. If you want to extend the service interval use top grade. If you want to drain and refill every 6 month use cheapo. Most people go for mid range oil nest of both worlds. U didn't meantion wat engine it was?

sorry its the 300tdi then I would defo go for mid range especially if you have EGR.

Yeh, thanx beverage, I had the ATF already to go but between two toolboxes we didnt have the right torx tool
Bought a 55 today from halfords, so just gotta buy my engine oil and filter and can finish off the winter service. Cheers.

yea it s a pain in the arsebut i guess they think if you can work out which torx bit you need u can work out gear box oil in not red lol
