hello all, proud owner of a 2001 holland and holland edition here. having some issues that i am hoping some kind individuals can help me with. first. the cd unit seems to load the magazine and discs but then when i turn on the radio unit i get "no magazine" i have been told that i need to replace the cd unit and others have said forget it and just use the radio. second. recently i took it in to have an annual going over and the shifter died so they replaced that but now the radio seems to be acting strangely. it comes on but no sound.. or random sound just from the rear door speakers. no volume or adjustments allowed. the nav system appears to be working fine. i noticed that in another post someone said something about the battery going flat and the nav system getting blown and not working. i have had issues recently with the battery. it is less than six months old but after having the annual going over and the shifter replaced it was flat after driving home. charged it up and let my baby run for a while. the next morning the battery was flat again. charged it fully with the charger and now (fingers crossed) it seems to be fine. the radio problem started while it was being worked on. so... i dont know if there is a fuse problem.. nav system prob.. wiring problem.. or the radio just needs to be replaced. i know that rovers have a bad rap about electrical but i dont know whats going on and really could use some help. thx in advance for any and all assistance.

hi, Check the cd changer lead is plugged in atr the back, i had a similar problem and the lead had come out, the battery going flat i think may be a problem with the rf unit, i recall a similar problem with this always seeking and running the battery down, Im sure others will have different experiences but those are the two ive had and know of, hope it helps

I have the same problem on my vogue with the stereo but now i have no sound what so ever. I have spoken to range rover and they seem to think it is an AMP problem. I have part numbers if you require them. As for your battery going flat as it says on threads on this site it could be down to some sort of pulse or radio wave waking up your computer during the night. Under the rear top plastic panel's in the boot are radio receivers and they can pick up on signals. people recommend disconnecting them or replacing them with something not sure what, could be worth checking out these threads.

thx for the replies. yes i have checked the connections on the player. it does not seem to actually load the cd from the magazine. the player part moves up and down and that is it. is it possible that the player is not catching the trays in the magazine or that the magazine is not the correct one? as for the battery, yes i did have a jump from someone but it didnt work out the problem.. it was the broken shifter. could that have blown the amp or another part. i have checked all the fuses and they are all good. the nav comes on but i dont really use it so i am not sure if they are conflicting somehow. where is the amp and how would i go about getting one and replacing it. again..thx for the help all.

There are a lot of people who would say never jump start a Rangie esp not with batteries connected pos-pos and neg-neg as this can pop electrics like the sound amps etc. or worse. Neg should be connected to the car body instead, apparently. Others say they've never had probs jump starting, personally I remove the battery and recharge or use one of those booster packs or a new battery (I keep a second one on chage just in case from the days I had the RF receiver problem.). The amps are only available from dealers and cost a small fortune - beware of fleebay ones as many are jiggered. Sometimes, though you can pick up a replacement stereo off fleebay if you buy from a reputable source - the Alpine units in the "upgraded" Rangies are unfortunately not easily repairable like the Clarions are from the pauper spec cars as spares are no longer available.

Less of the Pauper spec cars with the Clarions Rangiegal! The Clarions were fitted to all Pre 99 cars. They came in different levels from basic (alright, Pauper) on the DTs to Harmon Kardon on the Vogues. It was only in 99 onwards they fit the Alpines to all variants. It wasn't an 'upgrade', it was a replacement.
So there. :D:D:D

hello all, an update on my holland and holland. it appears that the battery problem has corrected itself... guess the gremlins decided to move to another vehicle. this afternoon when i got in and started it the radio worked great then i changed it to spacial setting and it just stopped working. i take it that the amp is not blown since it worked for a bit but then again i am not a electronics/electrical guy. any ideas or insights? and again, thanks so much for your assistance in this.

could be a dry soldered joint in the head unit, mine works with a tap then ges off when it feels like it, quick tap and it comes back on! i have also seen cut wires in the loom at the back of the unit, sometimes touching sometimes not. as everything works sometimes it must be connection related somewhere, just down to investigation

rave cd states that petrol models should be jumped pos to pos neg to body/earth point, diesels can be battery to battery so its not just some people, its the fellas who make em!!! me personally i have always connected the battery to the body or other earth on any car, its just habit i suppose!

Normally, ANY car handbook will always tell you to connect +ve to +ve and the -ve to an earth point on the body or preferably the engine. This is done for safety reasons only and is really a hang up to the days when all batteries had fillers and vents. The vapours released by a battery are explosive and a spark generated by trying to get a large croc clip on either terminal could ignite those gasses. With sealed batteries, that problem is not as great as it was. I can only assume it recommends connecting terminal to terminal with the diesel to make sure you get as good a connection as possible as turning a diesel over takes a lot more juice than a petrol. (or maybe there's not so much metal showing to connect to with the engine being covered by a plastic cover?) So, the recommendation to connect +ve to +ve and -ve to body/chassis/engine is NOTHING to do with BECMs, ECUs etc etc. It is purely to avoid the risk of an explosion. (Also probably to avoid the possibility of a short circuit by two well used uninsulated croc clips coming into contact with one another).
