Before I leap ahead and purchase a Defender, I'm looking to see if I can hire one for a day or two, stack up some miles on various sorts of roads, and check that I can live with it for the longer term - a test drive up the road and back doesn't really tell you that.

What I am looking for is a Defender 300tdi, 110, Station Wagon - perhaps like this place;

Adventurehire.co.uk

Don't need to go offroad though!

Obviously it i best if it is reasonably accessible (which Bristol isn't), so I would be looking in locations I expect to visit in the next couple of months - Dyfed, New Forest/Bournemouth, or Cambridge.

Anybody know of anything?

I think you'd struggle to hire a 300tdi, even the newest ones are 16 years old, much older than hire companys would keep a vehicle for.

Seems to me the link you have provided answers your own question, the solution sits on your doorstep. You can hire exactly what you want from £120 a day, as the site says;

The trucks are all supplied with the legendary Landrover 300tdi engine. This is the overland engine of choice due to it's simplicity, linear power delivery combined with a lack of electrics mean these trucks keep on going and get you through no matter what.

You live in Pembrokeshire and say Bristol isn't accessible?

would have thought Bristol was quite a good location - lets face it, there aren't going to be many companies in South Wales who can help... you are after something incredibly specialist, i'm amazed anyone offers a 300tdi as hire!

(though i'd argue that the 200tdi is a better overland engine...!)

Problem is that their location is 3 hours from me (whatever Google says). That means a 6 hour day on top of any driving in the Defender. This means a hotel, which bumps the cost.

Hence the other locations where I will actually be visiting anyway.

I realise I am probably looking for a rare beast, but I thought there was just a chance somebody on the forum might know of something that is not on the internet.

Am I missing something here? You're 3 hours away, so leave at 0600, arrive at 0900. Pick up Defender and you have all day to 'play'. 3 hours drive home and you'll be back home by 2100.

makes me tired just reading that :eek:

Dead right Trax. I used to do that kind of thing - and probably then party half the night and crash on somebody's floor. Doesn't look such an exciting idea nowadays!

Make a weekend of it? Take the missus for a "weekend away" then go places In a hired 300tdi :)
