Well after some delay etc i finally got round to buying a HiLift Jack

So today before using it have done some reading and been told they can be dangerous bla bla bla

Anyway also read how bloody handy they are - you can recover from them lift/squash get out of ruts the lot! Well chuffed i got it now! jsut dont wanna sqiuash myself in it though.

Any tips for Tree/Green lane recovery - would couple strops and some shackles do the job for tree recovery?

chain would apper to be the best solution, you can only pull for the legth of the jack, then ya gotta re-set and start again...

You need a couple of D or Bow shackles that will fit in the holes on the jack. Some chains have suitable hooks. They are best used with a chain aswell as strops to be able to short link otherwise you lose most of the travel of the jack just taking up the slack.

Make sure you have a good variety of strops/ropes that can be joined together. The last time I used my jack as a winch I didn't have any chains on board so it was a PITA to keep adjusting the straps/ropes.

I bought the Hi Lift off road kit and it's really worth the money as long as you have 3/16 chain for it to work along. It makes winching about 100x faster and comes with everything you need except the chain. Including some sweet gloves

It's so you can remove any slack with the chain (known as short linking) to give the maximum distance of travel for each length of the jack that winch in.

Most just have them for an ornament

I last used mine to turn my sand rail upside down to weld a new floor in. Great bit of kit

Ok. Back to basics it is then.

You've just winched your landy 6 foot forward but are still stuck in mud and need to winch again. This means you have to shorten the chain/strops by 6 foot in order to pull again.

Here is your chain

Note the narrow slots in the hooks. This is designed to slot over one of the links and grip the chain like so......

By doing this you can repeatedly shorten the strop/chain combo to get maximum distance movement out of yer jack. Does that make sense?

If you look at the pics I posted you will notice there is no chain and I had to repeatedly adjust the red strap which is extremely time consuming.

Just watched it again! But the write up reference the chain makes mega sense now! Not bein in that situation it's hard to think of what someone means when I've never seen

I found my hi-lift an invaluable piece of kit. Ive always been able to get my self out of stuck situations removing mine. They are dangerous though if things go wrong.

A few years ago I was lowering down a scrap jaguar with mine after i had jacked it up to remove the wheels and my hands slipped of the handle and the handle flew up and hit me just below the lip. Put an inch split between my lip and chin which I could poke my tongue through

Crushed fingers are another side effect of winching using a hi-lift anorl.
