Hello folks

I'm refugee from a Mitsi Delica. Was fun for a while but have got kind of sick of all the catastrophic failures. I've been thinking about replacing it for a while. But with what? Yesterday I looked under the bonnet of a Ford Mondeo, and got a heavy case of THE FEAR. WTF is it with all that plastic? How are you supposed to change a light bulb?

In short I've decided I need a Land Rover. I live in the Highlands so the 4x4 thing is really very useful. I want a car that is easy and cheap to repair myself. I learnt to drive in a 109 on forestry tracks, used to drag trees out with it, drive it down the beach, treat it like a tool. Mind you, still have the memories of excruciatingly uncomfortable journeys in it, and if I'm going to sell the idea to the Mrs will have to go for something a little later.

I'm cheap, so can't afford a Defender, I'm after a 110. I have two small children, and annoying as they are, I've got kind of used to having them around and feel they should probably have proper seats which point in the right direction. So I need a 5 door 110, hopefully already converted to something more sensible than the old TD. 30mpg sounds positively frugal after my time at the filling station with the Delica.

I kind of worry about rotten chassis, are they all made of brown paper at that age? And blowing head gaskets - the Mitsubishi 4M40 engine is the biggest load of ****e which ever left the sunny shores of Japan and has left me with deep pyschological trauma and head gasket related anxiety.

Anyway, have to polish my turd of a truck and sell it - then I will actively be in the market. Hopefully you'll see me around here for a few years to come asking annoying questions.

:welcome2: my 90 is a 1987 and no signs of chassis rot yet, have you considered a disco as you will get alot more for your money?

I have considered them. I like the look of the Disco II a lot, but I really want a stripped down no frills car which I can take apart like a meccano set and keep going indefinitely.

A leafer with parabolics, esp on a 109 isn't that short of a coil ride so I wouldn't write off a series completly. Still plenty of good chassis' and bulkheads on 109's and 110's around if you have the time to be picky.
Wrong time of year really as the snow tax is starting to take effect but happy hunting anyway

Thanks for the advice. I'm waiting for the snow to come, then will sell my Japanese **** box. Plan on the 110 in the spring. I'm a nurse with a young family which means I'm totally skint, so it's the best way to do it.

I do like the 109 - do parabolics really make that much difference? I know a while back there was a lot of firms flogging Series chassis with coilers instead of leafs, don't see many around these days.
