Hi all, Been looking around & thought this forum looked very good so thought i would join you.

I've been wanting a Landrover or Disco for years (since I was about 10) & have only just got around to buying one (I'm a bit older than 10 now  ). I've just bought a Discovery 1 (L reg) V8 Auto on LPG, been looking a while & found 1 that seemed in good order, no major rust (nothing at all in the boot floor & wings) engine is quiet, ticks over nicely on gas, no water leaks in the cabin, manual sun roofs so they cant stop working...

I bought it off a familly friend so I'm sure I havent bought a lemon, but...

I get a clang going into reverse gear but it didnt do it when I bought it. last week. I think its comming from the front diff, If you lay down next to it the front driveshaft turns a little as it goes between drive & reverse. it doesnt clang into drive, only reverse & theres oil in the diff.

I'm assuming it must be a common fault & I know enough not to try & rebuild 1 (meshing the gears etc). So I'm assuming I may need a new diff, so...

Any good places to buy second hand or reconditioned near bristol?
Do they all do it?
Should I worry?

Also there is a whine between 30 & 70 could be the diff, could be the Auto Box. I was told its done it for 9 years so isnt likley to cause a problem, again...

finally, the rear diff is a bit rusty, the off side shock mount has almost rusted through where crud has been caught, is it iron or steel? If steel i can weld it up.

By the way, sorry for asking all these questions up in my opening post

welcome to looneyzone, first thing i would do is change and top up all the fluids in the axles, gearbox and transfer box you never know that might help.
Mine goes bang when i go between hi and lo ratio !

Shouldn't worry too much, my last Disco was a 3.9 auto and it clanged and banged into reverse every time for the 2 years I had it.
Keep your gearbox oil in good condition (clean and red).
The whining is probably coming from the transfer box - they all do it.
As Disco71 said, do a check of all your oils for peace mind.

Thank you all for the warm welcome... & yes I am a huge Pratchett fan :D *takes a bow*

I liked "Topsy And Tim" & the "Wide Range Readers Series" when I was a kid.

I will replace all the oils asap (my wifes Saxo VTR just failed its MOT with flying colours, being French I expected as much >< )

Any ideas if the axel is steel, I think it must be as the lug the shock attaches to (where the rust is) doesn’t look obviously cast from what I can remember.
