Hi

I am looking for my first land rover, looking for a 90 defender, budget of around £3000 - it is part hobby / part 2nd vehicle for my work, I refurbish machinery so often have to chuck a load of tools or parts in tha back of my car which the Mrs is not so keen on.

Can anyone offer me advice please on the pitfalls? I want a diesel engine, and a van type back with a door (rather than the open back).

Will be a local runaround, no major distances as I have an estate car for long journeys.

Many thanks, hope to be an owner soon. looking at a few this week.

Cheers

Johnny.

Hello mate and welcome from a fellow newbie:) Im in the same situation, the price of 4x4's has shot up since this snow so its best to leave it a month i reckon.

One of the vehicels I might look at is a non turbo, no power steering 90 - does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I am guessing it is going to be a very heavy drive, and difficult to manoevure when parking etc?

Opinions (sensible) appreciated.

for 3k you'd get either a VERY good TD or a reasonable 200Tdi engined vehicle - both of which will have PS as standard - non PS non Turbo engined 90s are hard work and will be showing their age

Welcome Chap. I recently went from a TD to a 200TDI and the latter is the dogs doodas by comparison. As mentioned, going to be more £ so you will need to balance this with the rest of the car. My view, forget going for one with goodies on it as this just inflates price and can suggest a harder life (eg, steering guard = off roader maybe). EBay is a good starting point but go and see it checking bulkhead, crossmember, chassis - all for rust / holes and have a look at the exhaust at start up for any excess smoking. Lets face it for £3k, you will have to balance things off somewhere, for me that is make sure it works, forget the glossy stuff. Good luck

for 3k you should be ably to get urself 200tdi 110. I currently have a 110 with a 2.5TD n the only thing i wanna do right now is put a 200tdi in it.

thanks for the advice chaps, found her today, a red van back 90 defender 200 tdi on a K plate 1993. 103000 miles, pretty tidy.

Pick her up Saturday, cant wait now!

Here she is!!

more than 3, less than 3.5

a little more than I wanted to spend, but compared to the others I saw I reckon its a fair price. 12 months MOT, 5 virtually new tyres.

The engine bay is very clean too, the body has a few dinks and some minor corrosion, bit all round I am pleased.

nice tidy original looking 90 that - get some standard rims and it'll look £300s worth even better

nice one
