Mine's on the spare wheel carrier, as MHM said ... two holes drilled, 2 M12 bolts mounted with Nylocs, then a reversed byloc as a stop and a pair of nylocs to hold the jack in place.

hmm, spose i could just tek it off when it's in shopping cart mode and swmbo's taxi mode so it dont get pikeyed.

i see you have bfg at's on your's pauld are any good off road?

oh ive got freestyle alloys by the way would it still work or would i need a proper mount.

cheers anyway guy's i'll get looking

paul

Yup, the AT's are excellent off-road. OK, they won't take you right through a swamp, but for anything else, well .. I rarely get too stuck .. ;)

Dunno about the alloy spare, I'd guess there'd be no problem as the centre hub hole's the same diameter.

I'll take a couple of closer pics tomorrow to show you the fittings as I have them and with the hi-lift on.

thank's pic's would be great,it'll have mach 5's on it eventually when i can afford to buy some more.

Mine's only a 4' Hi-lift, and the roofline is higher .. ;)

Besides, it'd pull the cd mag-mount off first, so I'd get some warning ... and that's not hapened in maybe five years laning like this.

OK, Pictures of how I do mine .... Cheap and cheerful, a little fiddly, but not had any issues with it yet and I know it's solid. I change the locking Nylocs when they get loose enough to undo by hand and always carry a 19mm ring spanner to tighten 'em up (or loosen them) when/if necessary on the lanes.

Pic 1. The Bolts mounted on the spare wheel carrier, and nuts & washers as it is when I'm not carrying the Hi-lift.

Pic 2. The bolts showing the outer two nylocs and 1 washer taken off ready to mount the Hi-lift. The Jack mounts onto the washer and nyloc stops it in the right place. This was a little fiddly to get right, but once it is right, it's there until you change a tyre, but is really just a few screw turns either way to suit!! Awkward bit was getting the nylocs on 'in reverse'.

Pic 3. The Hi-lift mounted and washer and nylocs tightened up ready to go anywhere .. ;)

Pic 4. Just another view of how high it's mounted overall. You can see the two bolt holes on the Jack marked with yellow paint so I get the right holes when mounting it. The spare wheel acts as a cushion for the top and bottom of the jack. It has to be fitted this way round as the mechanism sticks into the tyre too far the other way round.

Dunno is the short answer ... ;)

Got it off ebay. My nephew and I were thinking of reproducing it and selling them, but it appears the laws on selling towbars would prohibit this, so we didn't go any further. I believe it's a copy of the one Scorpion racing used to do with a couple of enhancements, thicker wall section and better welding .. ;)

I got fed up of replacing the standard towbars ... even if you could pick them up on ebay for a tenner or so .. ;)

I'll do a few pics later if you want. I had a set of them posted here for someone else, but can't find them on the computer at the moment ..

Thanks Paul, I thought it looked like the Scorpion one but didn't know if I was allowed to use that word!

Does this mean you don't have a tank guard?
I keep bashing my standard tow bar and clogging the back of it up with mud so I want to replace it with something. Just worried that if I replace it with a Scorpion type one it would leave the fuel tank vulnerable

Yep, no tank guard. Got a couple of pics now and it should show that the tank is indeed pretty well guarded anyway ..

Some general views and the towbar/offroading socket/shackle. In fact I now don't bother with the shackle and use a strop directly into the socket with the locking pin to secure it.

A guard hasn't been necessary so far .. the only time it would have helped was on the North Yorks moors when i dropped off a large step and bent the (original style) towbar sideplate into the side of the plastic tank! Took a large rock, a large jemmy-bar and another Lanrover to straighten it out enough to keep going. The tank was fine ... If you look at the last couple of pics, the side plates to the socket/receiver are pretty substantial and have survived larger drops intact.

paul d spot on mate that'll do it' ive just aranged to swap jack's with a mate of mine cos a five footer would stick a fair bit above the roof line and i can see this causing a lot of unwanted damage if it ever catches owt.

couple more questions for you though, have you lifted your motor? and what size at's are they?

halo

Not really lifted, I have HD springs fitted all round, these don't sag like standard springs so the impression is that the Disco is lifted when it isn't really. The BFG's are 31 x 10.5 R15's on 8j wheels. They were on 7j alloys, hence why my spare wheel has two steel wheelnuts on each stud .. but I prefer to spread the tyre out as a lot of my time is spent on green lanes and on mown grass where I want/need to minimise damage.

Actually, looking at the pics I posted they're not as it is now .., when I had the tubular front bumper on (as those pics show) I also had Extra Heavy Duty front springs on 'cos we were going for a winch, decided against it and put normal HD springs on. That's why the front looks odd in those pics .. the following are how it is now, and it's way better without mis-matched springs!!

Thanks for that Paul,
I just need to find someone other than Scorpion who sells them now.
Why do you think it would be illegal for you to make and sell them? Type approval for tow bars is only needed on vehicles from 1998 (I think) on, so as long as they were going on something older than that I wouldn't have thought there was a problem

Yeah, we thought TA would get us ... I'll look further into it this weekend, see what nephew thinks .. he's the one who was badgering me to help for him to produce bits, tow-bar, rocksliders, tank guard, bumpers etc for Landies. He's a welder/fabricator by trade and recently laid-off but has all his own kit in a lock-up so we might get something together to make our own design or pattern bits.

I'll let you know next week, he gets back from France on Saturday.

Out of interest, what would you pay for a towbar receiver like mine either on it's own or complete with a towing plate, copied from mine? Or what price would you consider reasonable and would think seriously about buying one for?
