Hi Guys :)

As if it wasn't self explanatory, I'm Matt! I'm from Hinckley in Leicestershire and have been a fan of Land Rovers for a few years now. Have in the past owned a standard Series III lightweight, and a Defender 110 2.5 N/A Diesel, both were direct ex MOD. Done a bit of greenlaning and pay & play offroading in the past, before having to sell my vehicles to start my business, don't currently own a Landy.

I'm a mobile welder and mechanic and use a 1998 SWB ex RAC Transit for my business, but looking to expand slightly (Hoping to have my own garage up and running late this year or early 2010) and sadly my Transit is only rated at 1700kg towing capacity. As I'm looking at towing in heavier commercial vehicles and 4x4s as I expand, I'll need to upgrade to something which is plated to tow 3.5t. Conveniently, a commercial Defender 110 will give me that towing capacity and enough load space for my tools, and also allow me to come back into the off roading scene in my time off :)

Anyway, that's me... hope to be around here a bit in future and establish myself as a regular as I love these things. So hello to all!

Matt.

Thanks for the welcome.

Will probably be a couple of months yet realistically before I get the 110, need to shift the Transit first, but it's not exactly the right time to be selling these commercial vehicles at the moment, so may be around for a while before I get the right offer.

Probably looking at a budget of between 4.5k and 5k pounds to spend when the time comes. Seems I can get myself a nice later TDi with that money with reasonable miles, or the TD5 just comes into that price bracket, but tends to be ex water board etc with higher miles on. We shall see, but wither way, I am indeed quite looking forward to getting muddy again.

Hiya Matt. :welcome2: to landyzone.

Your budget of 4.5k-5k should easily get you what you want.

110 commercials don't seem to fetch as much as 90's or 110csw's. You should be able to pick up a very late 300tdi or early TD5 for 3.5k.

I only paid 3.5k for my 1999 TD5 csw last year. It's an ex northern electricity board one which had 128k on the clock. It's had some niggles but it was too good a bargain to turn down.

You may be better off with an ex utilities vehicle. These sometimes have side lockers which makes access to your tools so much easier. I found that getting things from the back of my 110 van could be a pain in the arse when it was full.

Try Brightwells, they seem to be having a lot of ex environment agency 110's through at the moment, i got mine from there for just shy of 4k its a 1999 Td5 with 118k on the clock and fsh

3.5k for a TD5 CSW? I'm impressed. I've only used fleabay as a rough guide of how prices pan out, and came to the conclusion that 4k would be a starting point for a TD5 110 Commercial (Plus VAT, which I would claim back anyway), and I'd be expecting 150k miles for that too. Looks like the bargains are out there, maybe beyond ebay, impressive buy.

I must admit to being in a TDi/TD5 limbo in my mind. I'm a competent diesel technician, I served an apprenticeship with DAF, but am more comfortable with the older mechanical generation of engines that the TDi stems from, than the newer electronic generation. But also aware that alot of TDis, commercials especially are racking up the miles now too.

I hear what you mean about things being a pain in the arse when full, I will miss the larger load space and side loading door of the Transit, but needs must really and I need that higher towing capacity, side lockers if not already fitted may indeed pay dividends for my usage.

Brightwells.... I'll head off to Google.

That sounds like a damn good price to me with 118k and FSH!

Is said 'grunt' noticeable enough to make it worth it? (in your opinion)

Driven plenty of TDis, but never a TD5. Do like the sound of them though

The extra grunt is noticable especially when towing but, If you are gonna be doing a lot of towing a 300tdi would be cheaper to repair as and when the clutch goes as it doesn't have a dual mass flywheel. If you are wanting to tow with a TD5 and the management system starts playing up or the turbo wastegate starts sticking then towing in limp mode is no fun.:(

Food for thought then, cheers.

Another doubt in my mind is I don't want to compromise the reliability by going offroad and getting the electrics wet. The van would be for business use first, but as said before, it would serve a second purpose and let me get back to offroading, and I do like a good dunking it has to be said.

Neither myself nor buckshot has had any water get to the ecu or throttle potentiometer and we have both been wading with water over the bonnet height. I do carry a spare potentiometer onboard just in case though.

after doing this ford we both had a small dribble of water in the seatbox.

Not atall bad then, have you done any home made waterproofing, or is that completely standard?

apart from the snorkels we are both running as standard. Buckshot even has drain holes drilled in his seatbox courtesy of the tossers in the main stealers.

I just gotta make sure all my stuff is off the floor in the seating area when deep water wading cos the door seals are typical landrover non-fitment.:D

Had no problems with water ingress in the rear stowage area though.:)

Sounds to me like there's little reason to worry then. I'd heard horror stories from a guy I worked with who previously worked at an LR dealership about water always being an issue with the electrics on the TD5.

Never quite took it as gospel mind, he was one of those chaps who exaggerated every claim as far as possible!

Still no further to deciding what I want though. TDi or TD5, I think it'll more come down to what's available at the time, what condition it's in, and what catches my eye.

go around a few dealers and test drive a few of each. That way you'll know what the performance differences are/should be when you are actually ready to buy.;)

PM the mad hat man. He makes the TD5 ecu relocation cables if you are worried about your ECU.

There's a local dealership with a few TD5s in at the moment, way overpriced mind but I wouldn't be buying from them! So I might head over and testdrive one tomorrow. Driven plenty of TDis so I know what to expect from them :)

Actually made the time to go to my local dealership today and got a drive of a TD5 Defender they had in (allbeit a 90, not a 110).

My first drive of any TD5 further than moving a Discovery in a carpark, and have to say it was a nice drive. Not heaps more power that I was expecting over a TDi, but it seemed to be much more civilised on the road, I think I would notice the difference when towing though. One major advantage, allbeit a pointless one is the TD5 sounds absolutely gorgeous when on full chat, but much quieter inside when low in the rev range, much less knock, a very civilised diesel engine.

I am infact quite sold by the TD5. The one I drove had 144k miles on a W plate, and felt fine.
