I have Series 2 1960 Land rover and when we bought it last week at an auction I realised that despite it being listed as a petrol it in fact had a diesel engine in it. It was sold as a non runner but after buying it and a bit of tinkering for 5 minutes I had it started. It's going to be a restoration project which I have already started and is going well. As I have the engine out I have decided to give it a rebuild but am a little perplexed as to what engine it is.
I have posted a picture for you here

The number on the head is HRC 1479
Numbers on the block are:
HRC 1590
15J01294C
14L5
88UE H

I have looked around and the closest I can match it to is one out of a Land Rover Ninety ! The pictures match really well.

If anyone could help as need to order some parts for it.

Also if anyone fancies a giggle, after taking off the tub and looking between the rear axle and the chassis on the O/S I found this :)

Hi James, Thank you for the reply. I'm going to completely rebuild the engine so any idea what year and what vehicle I should quote for sourcing the relevant parts ie head gasket, piston rings, big end shells etc.
Thank You :)

use parts for 2.5 na, main bearings are decided by whether you have a turbo feed plugged hole or not ,cam belt needs to be sherpa, id imagine it would need new pistons and a rebore unless recently done,l can help with the numbers if you struggle

Brilliant, thank you once again James :) I don;t suppose you would know where I could get the N/S/R and O/S/R tub side/wing panels from do you. The small panels either side of the tailgate seem easy but these are proving to be quite illusive.
