Hi all, I'm just about to get my first landy - a 11reg freelander2 td4 from the local stratstone dealer in Stockton. The dealer also offered a three year service package at £1030 (85% of the actual price covering 3rd,4th,5th service - it has got 2 services done), to be paid on a monthly basis.

Does anyone know if there is a cheaper place to get the service done in Teesside, say some Land Rover expert but not the main dealer?

Thanks,
Lazylenny

Hi, I am in Sedgefield, dont know a good repair shop for Landrovers in Teeside, there is a guy though in Osmotherly, Charles Bennison 07779666634. The best service I know in the area is Durham 4x4 run by an ex Landrover / Stratstone Engineer.............call Graham or George on 01913778761 tell them the guy from Sedgefield gave you their number............

Thanks, Lanedriver. I used to live in Durham and I remember there was a Strastone Landrover in Durham years ago.

Just visited durham 4x4 facebook site, quite impressive with all the photos. I guess their service cheaper than stockton stratstone? My next service will be March 2013; now I need to decide whether or not to purchase the service package from the Stockton Strastone. Does anyone know whether the above offer (£1030 for 3rd/4th/5th services) is good?

Well, a lot depends on what you want to do with the car. If you're hoping to sell it soon, then a complete main dealer service record will be an advantage. On the other hand, if you're intending to keep it a long time, then you'd be better off buying your own oils, filters etc. and a few tools if you don't already have them and it will work out a lot cheaper than the main stealers. So you pays your money and takes your choice. Generally, whether it's cars or electrical goods though, firms wouldn't be offering these service plans if they didn't make money on them.

Thanks, Brown, for the useful suggestions. What kinds of tools should I buy? I have never done any service for a car though (hence I've spent thousands on other cars for services/repairs etc).

I'm not a Freeander owner, so I can't comment on the specifics of that model. If you search on here you'll see lots of discussion where people talk about their favourite brands of socket sets and the like so there's a lot of useful consumer-oriented information about. Plus a manual! I know people laugh at them, but I quite like those Haynes ones as a rough guide to procedure, and for more technical detail if you're getting into repairs in a big way try and find a copy of the big workshop manual that Land Rover themselves produce. Pricey, but my Defender one has been worth it. And read the Freelander section on here.
