HI and help

Hi all need some help if you can.Just got a series 1 with a carbretter v8 rover appox 1975 unknown origin needed a service so done it myself with the help of a friend.Changes ht leads plugs distributor cap rota arm points and condenser,now we cant get a spark from the leads or points somebody told me we should have 3 wires inside by the points but only have 2 one coming from outside and one from the condenser if the 3rd wire that links the 2 stater plats is inside the distributor could it earth out and stop the points from making a spark ???

back on the road again problem sorted bad contact with points running like a drean cant wait to get off roading again
