Hi. Drove my landy 110 with 200tdi engine and got a strong burning smell in the cab. Pulled over looked under car and saw smoke coming from transfer box or the diff.

I wouldn't even class myself as an amateur mechanic and wonder if anyone could give me some on advice on if it's an easy fix or not. Could be that I let the oil level get to low.

Any help would be massively appreciated

Chris

Could just be some oil burning off the exhaust! If you are worried about oil levels why not check and top up if needed? Any noises from the trans?

Where are you based ? Someone may be able to come round and have a look for you. Personally if it was me before looking into rebuilt ones I'd drain the oil and drop the sump then have a look inside and see if its that or something else that's causing the burning smell. At least if you drop the sump you may be able to see if there's damage

As well if you've just had it under sealed and some got on the exhaust then it could be that if you have

Liverpool. I'll get someone to have a look at it. Does the fact that I smelt burning mean it is beyond the point of no return or if I top it up could I save the box

Check Handbrake isnt binding,
Check its adjusted properly,
Check oil level and colour condition,

Personally I'd check the handbrake first instead of ripping it to bits. If the oil got that hot it will be noisey as heck bearings may have become damaged it would be obviously Fubar. The fact that you do not mention it was excessivly noisey I'd go with simple fixes first. i.e handbrake.
