well the wait is over, finally had the head gasket go at 190 000kms. coolant gone, steam from exhaust, but oil is still ok, so I'm hoping no major damage. going to pull the head off tomorrow. wanting to know if there are any traps to watch for?, any tips?. any help would be great.
Thanks Aussie

HGF in spectacular style then ;)

Did your temp gauge rise more than normal?

Take your time (search the other threads and referr to Haynes or RAVE), set cam sprocket and crank pulley timing marks before you undo any bolts.

You will prob need new intake manifold gasket as well as head gasket. Possibly exhaust Manifold gasket too but not always. Not to mention exhaust downpipe gaskets.

Dont forget to check heights of liners as well as warpage of the head. Generally, if your temp didnt go up then all should be fine.

Possibly exhaust gasket too but not always. Not to mention exhaust gaskets as you will have to remove downpipe

.

Sorry just to clarify, thank-you slob for pointing out my error.

Should have said....

Exhaust Manifold gasket, or depending on where you split the exhaust

Exhaust Downpipe gasket and CAT flange gasket.

not to worry but if yer trying to enlighten the un-enlightened it helps if you can be precise orther wise they might fook up and then where would we be?

we'd be getting slated fer givin out duff info and that wint be good, ah mean the poor bloke's got enough trouble with a gaylander HGF so the last thing he needs is to be sat there wondering why he needs 2 lots of ighost gaskets.

dunt he need to check the liner heights before he rebuilds it and what about this noo up graded gasket and thermo housing. ah really think he should do a search fer the reams of info this forum has on gaylander HGF

all of these mods are appicable to 1.8 K series. Anyone knows similar mods for KV6?

KV6 - no mods available - later head gasket is one to go for (as in 1.8K) - no-one makes a remote thermostat, altho the manufacturers state there is no reason why it wouldnt work - the problem would be the mods to the "std" thermostat, as it is in a sealed plastic housing, that would have to be destroyed (that reminds me - must post piccies). Unfortunately as nothing is marketed for the KV6, its a "you're on yo own" jobby. You know my feelings on this, regarding lecky pump, alternative coolants, etc so "I refer to the answers I gave the honourable gentleman earlier" :D

if yu look at pics one and two yu will notice that there are two bi-pass pipes coming from below the thermostat. one goes forward along the top of the block to the water pump and the other is the small pipe on the top - cant remember where it goes. Yes yuo could drill a small hole through the thermostat from below, but it would be very fiddly to try and miss the thermostat fluid reservoir.
You can also see in pic one the mounting lug and the sealing (!?) O-ring. again - fitting with only one bolt - is it surprising that any force attaching the mating pipes and it breaks the lower spigot with the o-ring? Another brilliant design from LR! and to make it a complete sealed unit - marvelous.

Great pics MHM of the KV6 thermotwat.

did you ever break the seal in the stat housing?

Looks too tempting for me.....I would have had a go at breaking the seal, Im sure it was only bonded as not heat moulded

The stat looks the same as 1.8 version, if someone put it in there... then it has to come out for modding.

yup i can - did try - but it werent easy - think i mite destroy it trying - not that that matters :D according to QED? they sed it is diff - cos i asked them about the remote thermostat and they had nevva tried it on the kv6 - they sed it werent the same as the 1.8. I aint checked coz its a bitch to get to on the kv6.
