HG Failure at 150k. Worth fixing?

Personally I'd do a compression test and a leak down test on each of the cylinders. This will give an idea of wear generally and hopefully where the main problem is.

Then you can strip down that bank and change the head gasket if general wear is not too bad - it might just be an HG failure.

There are lots of things you'll be wanting to do if you get the engine out, strip it down and want to rebuild it but in the shorter term I'd do the above. You'll also know whether you've got any major problems that might mean the cost of a rebuild is going to be prohibitive.

Type landrover pdf manuals into google and you'll get them all come up.

Not sure how much top hat liners cost??

Hi All,

Think, my HG has finally given up the ghost after leaking for quite a while.

Now the engine has done (I think) 150k miles. Pretty sure it will need a new cam and timing chain as well as valve guides. Was thinking of getting the heads gas flowed while they're off too, although no idea who could do this locally.

Is there anything else likely to be knackered on the rest of the engine at this sort of mileage that would make it not worth doing? Oil pump, presumably but what about the rest?

I'm trying to work out if it's worth doing at all (not that I can afford it anyway!).

I did do a head gasket on my old Rover P6 3500S many years ago and found it fairly straightforward, but this is my only vehicle, so I'm a bit daunted this time. Are there any good tutorials/video guides around anywhere for this?

It's a 98 4.6 GEMS.

Cheers for any advice

Guy

Mine is also a 98 4.6 GEMS. 156k on the clock. Head gasket went becuase of stuck thermostat. Its an ok job (did mine out front on the road). Time consuming and took lots of pics as I went. Most time was spent getting the dreaded heat sheilds off the manifolds (never did refit them). If you've done a P6 you should be fine. You won't know what else needs doing till you get those heads off. Changed my waterpump and fan coupling when putting it back together. Done over 4000 miles since and running nicely. Doesn't use any oil and steady temp. Would say use decent new gaskets. I used oem's from island 4x4. Good luck.

Winner, nice one!

Hopefully kooky's will end up the same :)
