Hi All,

Just signed up. Only recently (October 2017) got myself my first landie.

I followed the family tradition of a green series 2a 88. My uncles did their driving tests in theirs, my grandfather went on honeymoon in his.

I’m no mechanic but I’m surrounded by excellent people and family to guide me as I learn my way around my car. Many of them series owners.

I’m 23, based down south on Hayling Island and drive my landie (when it lets me) for fun when I’m not working.

So that’s that.

Good choice, I think my 2a s were my favourite of the various landrovers I have owned and operated.
 
Petrol. Guy i bought it off offered me a spare diesel engine for free but i had nowhere to put it.

The free road tax and cheap insurance is a massive bonus, especially for my age group.

Petrol is better unless you do massive mileages. If I was ever to get another Series, it would be petrol engined.

Agreed, I was advised to go petrol over diesel, especially with the new limits being imposed on diesel in the near future. I was going to use it as my commuting car, office is a little too far though. Maybe i need a new job closer by just so i can drive it to work. ;)

So far, there is no talk of the new regs being applied to historic vehicles, and it is my hope that that will continue.

LR petrol engines of that period were better, though. The diesels were always an afterthought, in fact they were the same engine dieselised, which usually doesn't work all that well.

Good to hear. The engine on this landie sounds lovely and runs brilliantly. As I would expect from an MOD vehicle.

Any particular reason as to what the difference is that makes your 1989 LR 90 not a defender? o_O

LR petrol engines are very strong and low stressed. Lots of tolerance and over engineering in the design.

A Ninety or a One Ten, was built from about 1983 until about 1990. And they have 2.25 or 2.5 petrol or diesel, or 2.5 Turbodiesel (19j), or 3.5 V8s.
Defender 90 and 110 were built from 1990 on, and they have 2.5Tdi, or subsequent engines.

And, before some pedant jumps in, that applies to civilian vehicles. I have never had much to do with, or much knowledge of, military landrovers.

Ah okay, gotcha. Just google pretty much throws the word defender into the results when i searched land rover 90, just assumed it was a defender :)

Think that's amusing? There's people wanting insane prices for 90's and S3's because they see what defenders go for, One chap even said his was more valuable because of it's age. remember the Antiques roadshow 'Condition is Everything' S3 with fullt loaded rot for 20k anyone?

Look up the prices of a defender in the USA or Finland. You could make a mint buying them here and exporting them.

You cannot sell an imported vehicle in the USA unless it is 25 years old. So only Ninety/One Ten, and the first few years of Defenders qualify.
There is good money selling older vehicles in the States, but it always seems a shame to me. I prefer seeing them in their natural habitat. The farms, fields and lanes of the UK.

True, they look better at home. American muscle cars and big pickups look foolish and clumsy on English roads.
