Dale have a look at my Signiture or Anglian LRC - Home

There is a tyro trial on the 8th August in Tring I will be there. If you join the club and pay the days trialling fee from memory its £20 to join and £15 or £20 on the day you can take your mota around a trials course against other unlicensed and beginner drivers. Jai

Test your skills and get used to your mota. Green laning is also much fun and cheap you can drive them if you are legal to drive your 90 on the road with an appropriate licensed passenger next to you and L plates. Jai

right i will have 2 weeks from the 11th to the 25th of august in the uk - and i am determined to get something in during that time!

Dale,
Devil's Pit kills cars, the mud forms a grinding paste then sets solid. Like Jai says, Whaddon is much better.

dont think u can call it mud lol some kinda im gunna fook ur motor type stuff it is a real car breaker i use to live in barton been up pits many times walked back got van and towed truck back so stay away unless you have a toy to play in

Carpy come trialling you will **** all over me cos i'm on stupid tyres plus i don't think I can play anyways. We use trial sites all over from northampton to North weald airfield Jai

with which motor though?

im starting to track down some kit for the 110, gonna need to chuck in some serious money to get it looking good! found a very comprehensive kit list of an ex camel 110 currently used on expeditions which i might base my check list on

88 no doubt!
110 camel trophy yes very nice but it counts for nothing not being original. Thats why mine has not been as per the book cos it'll never be right.

Carpy you need to read this book by tom sheppard vehicle dependant expedition. Myself, Chris and Kai met him thanks to Chris' invitation. Camel trophy motors wer kitted for extreme terrain to be used crossing the amazon in a big group areas that have been inaccessable for months of the year. A camel 110 would be far too heavy to be ideal travelling around europe/asia/africa. A winch weighs loads plus a bull bar plus underbody protection etc if you had to make an emergancy turn at speed it won't be pleasant.

Other than looking cool it won't be much good in the desert. Heavy and underpowered take it from the expert Tom Sheppard he knows his stuff. Weight is bad news when travelling. Also think to yourself: when are you likley to need a winch when travelling? you don't drive the hard bits when you are driving across the sahara cos if you get stuck its not an AA call to get out. You drive around bad bits mabe for 10's if not 100's of miles to miss bits that could get you stuck. A winch is no good if there is nothing to attach it to. Expedition is a whole different game one which I am trying to learn with the help of Tom Sheppards book. So far Weight is bad news, organisation is everthing, comfort is a huge concern and longevity of vehicles and maintainance is paramount.

Things like covering steering joints with a plastic bag to prevent ingress of sand that will cause premature wear etc. I hate to say it but all my offroading gear is no good. If you see his vehicle jack and sand ladders you will laugh with disbelieve how crap they look but they are fit for purpose and they are indestructable, simple and will always work. take a look grab a book and have a read Jai

Hey Carpie, I am with Jai, We lean't more from this guy by talking to him for an afternoon and reviewing his ride than I would have thought possible!

Dale... you could always get your ride up to whaddon on Lplates and play for a while!

Its hard to swollow at first (bring on the jokes) but most of our gear is too heavy, overly complicated or a hinderance to be used for an expedition. Jai

All that said if its what you want then thats what you have to get. I hated Tom sheppards approach to travelling but after reading his book it all makes so much more sense than my cobbled together idea of what I need. Jai

interesting - will grab me the book at some point.

i see your point - it is differant to how many - i assume myself included - percieve it. my main aim with this camel trophy idea is initially to have a lookalike. it doesnt have to be spot on - the whole idea is it is functionable in the terrain i will be in - which incidentally isnt exclusively desert but also may involve some mud stretches - for example in gabon.

initially i will be basing the looks on a camel trophy. i.e sandglow paint, brownchurch heavy duty roof rack with supporting struts, driving and fog lights, bush bar and so on. i am not sure what to think about the winch. there are alot of contradicting points of view. on the one hand the weight is a burden, but in countries such as gabon it could be a very useful bit of kit.

i will chat to you guys about it next time i see you. if i head off to belize and stick it out there i will import my landy to north america after this trip and then drive it south. if that happens i will alter the vehicle more - it is then that i will study the camel trophy vehicle specifications in depth as from what i have gathered so far it is such environments that they were adapted to in the vast majority of cases

no good if it wont do what i am doing though. you guys may frown on it but i do enjoy working on the aesthetics of a vehicle - and i do love hte look of camel trophy vehicles. i tihnk i iwll therefore base looks on one, obviously with specific modifications towards the environments i will be travelling in. when i get back i will be mainly doing more rainforest like travel in it - thats when it will become a slightly more accurate replica

that said i must stress i dont wanna build an exact replica - it is never going to b a camel trophy. it might just look a little like one!

Just went to amazon to buy his book, there are a few, Do I want the Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide ???

Would suggest Vehicle Dependant Expedition guide. Not like most books its more a checklist of things you need to do with much guidance and from an experienced view from a top bloke. Jai

It's on it's way, I got the soft cover, as I figure a 100 squids is more than enough money for a book that doesn't even have naked woman in it :D

carpy its ur truck m8 do what ya want to it, people try and help out as much as they can but at end of the day its urs and you have to drive it etc just enjoy it paint it pink lol dare ya

will see what happens, first job is the paint, once thats done we will proceed with the other stuff. im thinking a warn 8274 - its lower profile and not quite as heavy as i understand. hmm- will have a ganders at this book and see
