First, I wanted to introduce myself. I moved up to Ware from SE London over the summer and have been watching the forum, but didn't get around to registering till now. I have a 1988 90 which I've had for about a year and recently put a 200tdi in over the summer.

Now here's the main reason for the first post. I was driving back home tonight from a quick 5min trip and starting hearing an almost hissing sound. I saw a train a fluid in the mirror and was about 1min from home, so finished the journey. It seems to be an oil leak coming from somewhere near the steering box almost.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Seems to be oil and not steering fluid.

Thanks for the help,

Looks like oil cooler has failed of the pipes have worked loose check the 2 black hoses with metal bends that attach to the side if the raduatir

The metal ends have an O ring seal if they were missing or failed or if the pipes have come loose or indeed rubbed through this would all explain the oil deffo get it fixed ASAP might be a simple 10p O ring or a tighten of the nuts if you need anything shout on here J

Hi thanks for the quick reply. Is there a way to check the o ring without draining the oil? Also, is it normal for it to just suddenly fail?

I'll try and clean it up tomorrow to have a better look

thanks,

Welcome to the Herts lining group too. Have you tried topping it up then running the engine while looking for the leak, I would agree with jai about checking the oil cooler pipes first.

I'd personally get a bottle of fairy liquid pour over engine bay and over the oil, then with a couple if boiling hot kettles of water wash it all clean fill up with cheap minimum spec oil and start it up look for leaks as KJ says should be pretty obvious. I'd deffo check the nuts invade they are loose tho first. Hissing to me would indicate a tiny hole leak or puncture possibly in the oil cooler rad itself. Good luck!!

Were having our usual pub meet Wednesday night in Dunstable but its a ways for you lot in Ware but everyone welcome J

Welcome Nj90. If the two bronze coloured metal pipes with the rubber pipes jube clipped on are your cooler pipes (your 2nd pic) then the back pipe looks suspicious to me. Check it's not split the rubber pipe at the top of the metal one.

Hi, I know there is probably the answer in this section but there is over 2000 pages you to look through.... Where would I find out where and if there are any green lanes win Herts or bucks even?... Kind regards. Dave

Or bring your maps along tomorrow night at the pub meet in Dunstable and we can show you how to find them and then how to make sure they're legal and give a few ideas which ones are legal and ok to use Atb
