There I was, doing 80 odd on the outside lane of the M3 with a BMW up the back**** when he suddenly slows down and turns his windscreen wipers on....

So, monitoring the gauges, the water temp starts nipping up to the red! My turn to slow down. temp gauge settles, be it a bit hot, but I'll able to gently cruise round to the services and have a look under the bonnet.

There's a nylon/plastic nut in the top of the thermostat housing that has split and thrown water out. 2 gallons later...

As I'm down Southampton for the weekend, without any tools I stopped by Hunters Garage and asked for help. A new Plug costs £3, the labour to get the old one out and fit the new one (they wouldn't lend me any tools for me to have a go!) £55 for half hours work.

So the question is, what is that plug for? other than annoying me to hell!

cant remember what you call it but it is used to bleed your cooling system when topping up or changing coolant. same as the one on your radiator.

usual advice is to buy the brass version to replace it or im pretty sure you can get them from diy stores as they are the same as household radiator plugs

I asked my mechanic mate about the plastic plug and he said they are made to blow if too much pressure in system. He said if they didn,t blow ,it could go somewhere else and do more serious damage to the engine. Ive still got the old plastic plug as he told me to leave it.

Your mechanic needs a poke in the eye with a blunt stick as fanatic says thats what expansion bottle caps for, they have a set preasure that they will release at and they will also let air back in when the engine cools down

Ok if my mate was wrong thats fair enough. I thought we came on this forum to try to help each other , there is no need to be abusive or ridicule people even if they are wrong. Ok rant over ! ;)

No?
we always ridicule peeps that act dumb - everyone gives and takes.

We werent ridiculing you - just the guy that gave you stoopid and incorrect information.
