I stuck my bmw E36 VC on while I cleaned mine up. It was wrong direction, howled constantly and over cooled (handy in summer when your FIP plays up).

I did get looks and the odd comment :D can’t remember what they said it sounded like...jet or something??

I still think yours is seized. Mine sounded like a tank often, since cleaning it up it goes like the others mention only briefly on start up and sometimes if I stop in traffic on a hot day. new one is stupid money though so if it goes okay. Wammers mentioned other day some convert to a 300TDI one

It works fine, just seams to cut in a bit to sensitive , never overheats even with big tin tent on back up a long hill.

This "cleaning it up" and getting a return to normal functioning suggests that the VC is a serviceable unit. Is this the case? Is it a documented service procedure or just a "DIY and hope" affair?

Some viscous units can be serviced others cannot.

Just me -nothing to lose, everything to gain- not spending stupid money for new one. Not supposed to be a serviceable unit, idea was to strip it and change the oil but it’s a sealed unit and I didn’t fancy drilling/tapping without a drill :rolleyes::eek: or tap n die set

I just cleaned it all up, shaved the fins.....and now it works???? Maybe I disturbed something inside, maybe the 24yrs of crap on it was effecting the internal temperature, maybe it was only partially struggling and increasing efficiency slightly tipped the balance?
No overheating this summer (even though my dash popped with the heat :() - stopping in traffic last winter was nerve wracking due to VC. It’s on here somewhere - WDYDWYRRT maybe? - with pictures
One on the right is the E36 one I keep for emergency, it runs constantly. This is after cleanup
