View attachment 6803I bought a Land Rover Defender about 3 months ago, which now appears to have been a bad buy :-(
Today it failed it M.O.T and I am very new to this as its my first Land Rover and I had a limited budget. It failed on the following points and I was hoping some good samaritan could give me a ball park figure of what its likely to cost to repair what is needed to pass the re-examination.

Reasons for refusal of a Test Certificate.

001 Offside upper Front suspension has excessive play in upper suspension ball joint. [2.5.B.1a]

002 Steering column shaft locking device insecure. [2.1.5]

003 Near-side Drag link end ball joint has excessive play. [2.2.B1f]

004 Offside Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30 cm of the body mountings. [6.1.3]

005 Near-side rear Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30 cm of the body mountings [6.1.3]

I fear my Landy days are over before they started!!

mostly depends on how bad and exactly where the corrosion is. the other stuff is relatively minor.
post some piccies of the corrosion and tell us where you are.

Have fun:

My disco failed on small hole in each sill (not bad), both number plate lights dead (well, still worked until the car was on, the vibrations moved the filament) AND, my fuel tank crossmember is wrotten, the whole thing needs replacing, and plate on the body mounts, and a new sender unit :D lovely!

the first 3 arent that serious - tenner for a new ball joint

the last 2 looks like the chassis has lost some thickness due to corrosion underneath the bump stops (which are missing) - this just needs plating with some 3mm plate, but it's in an ackward place so lets hope you've got a few spanners cos thats the sort of job a garage might want a good few hundred squid to do

Ah thats not too bad at all really...had to do the bump stop areas on my Series.

You need to cut off the bump stop mounts completely and see what lies beneath them - if the bump stop mounts are corroded, its likely the chassis will be underneath too.

It will probably be annoying to weld with the springs and other things in the way - I don't know Defenders well enough to know if it's possible to do it in place. It's not a big job to anyone that knows what they are doing - perhaps an afternoons work - so don't write off your landy just yet. You just need to find a friend that has some metal plate and a welder - the garage is likely to charge you a small fortune (unless of course you don't mind paying out then go for it!). Need to fabricate some bump stop mounts and buy new bump stops obviously.
