help !

2.5 l auto diesel 1999 t reg range rover - driving along - - 35 mph - suddenly started revving even though in gear - pulled over - wont engage gear at all - just revs - no history of jerking / jumping / slipping etc - any ideas - been with garage since last thursday - tells me needs to pull everythingout to diagnose problem - says prob needs recon box fitting - nightmare - no pennies - just lost kidney- 13 months off work - help !

Could just be no oil in the gearbox as autoboxes usually ok unless the fluid level drops so try that first

usually checking oil colouyr helps diagnoses ,blackish it needs to come to bits as 1 or more clutch packs burnt out ,often can be fixed relatively cheaply once box out,free wheel clutches often cause problems ,does it reverse
