Hello.

I hope you can help me with my husband's defender and our decisions.

Please excuse that I know nothing about cars, other than my husband loves this one..its our only car and a working farm vehicle. I hope I get all the technical things clear for people

Husband and his 300 TDi diesel were in a serious accident (no other car). DH is ok, but the car is a write off. (probably category d, so that's some good news)

We paid £8000 about 18 months ago, but it was in MINT rebuilt condition. The insurance valuation is £3,345. The damage repair estimate (fancy insurance repair) is £9,900.

DH will not have time (or ability) to repair himself. I've spoken to a non specialist but recommended garage (along way away, but as a friend of a friend they'll trailer the 100 miles or so to collect it). They looked at photos of damage and said....£2-4000 for repair, as a soft top or with a replacement body from a lightweight (?- parachute?).

They also suggested that, as it is repairable it might have resale value to some one who could do it themselves or for export to third world. How do you go about finding someone that wants a LR that's squashed but superb? And what would someone pay for it?

DH loves this vehicle, but its not going to be a quick repair, and frankly, money counts right now. we live in a rural area and need transport. We use the landy for towing and light farm work, but only out of love for it. Other wise he gets driven to the train station and to the supermarket. As its our only car I find I'm going out less and les because of the expense and also the fact although its the best, safest vehicle in the world its cold and rustic on the way back from driving for evenings out with friends. I'm thinking we might be better with a lorry for horses now and a lighter car for normal usuage. I know that's a tough call on a landrover forum.

DH isn't sure what to do, and neither am I.

I'm hoping some opinions from landrover fans might help. Especially on resale options and export....how realistic is that?

Could a lightweight body/soft top still tow the horses? Or would it be too light for legality? (not sure how that works with towing weights)

Sorry to hear...Really need to see some pics before the accident.

Never accept insurance co's first offer/valuation.

Search dealers and auction sites for similar year and spec of vehicle.

What year is yours? I think you have paid over the odds for it...but you'll want to get as much back as possible. Did your ins co ask for pics/spec when you bought it?

I only have post crash pictures on my computer :( ATM. I might be able to get some from him before the weekend (he's not at home)

Things that have been said are that the hard top, doors, windscreen are gone and could do with replacement bonnet but the bottom half of it is fine (hence option to make into a canvas top I suppose!)

Its G reg, and we new we'd paid a lot....we paid for it all done to the best because we never intended to sell it. Its swb. Its red with black chequerboard.

Thank you for the response. I know its a bit of a stab in the dark. I know its infinitely better that DH is ok and car isn't than the other way round, :):) and I'm so grateful he was in the LR not something else. I just don't know what we should do now.

If its just those things then it's an easy and reasonably cheap re-build...but get the chassis professionally checked!

And be aware that any future attempt to sell it will be at a lesser price as any search will reveal its been involved in an accident.

Get the post accident pics on then...and tell us what happened.

what happened was black ice. :( They were only going slowly (DH is a cautious drier) but the ice and verge meant a rollover. The police told me its a notorious spot and it happens ''regularly'' there.

I'll see if I can get pre crash photos ASAP. It looks pretty rough in this. I will delete the picture at some point so please do not copy into other posts.

Can't believe that's a write-off!

So from what you've described, there was no impact as such - in which case the chassis is likely to be fine. Land Rovers are like big Mecanno sets - most of it just bolts together. Replacing roof, sides, windscreen, etc. isn't beyond the capabilities of the home mechanic, let alone a garage.

Where in the country are you located? There must be an independent Land Rover dealer nearer than 100 miles away.

With regard to changing it from a hard-top to a soft-top, that's not going to make any difference to towing capabilities. It will make it a bit draughty though!

Insurance co will quote new part prices and labour from Land Rover...thats why its a write off..these prices will have no relevance to the real world!!

May have to go down road of 'buying back' from ins co and doing it theirselves with good used parts...i would.

Yep - me too. But it doesn't sound like "doing it themselves" is an option. Even so, a trustworthy independent should be able to source used parts saving a ****-load of cash.

doesn't look like too difficult a fix at all, post your rough location and someone nearby may be able to offer help seeing what parts are needed or sourcing them and maybe more.

Wow, thank you all for the great response! I can't believe how helpful you are all being!

THANK YOU!

I'm in west (ish) wiltshire. :)

Good job you a) Posted in right section
b) Posted on a weekday

It gets a bit rowdy after 4pm on a friday...

Should be plenty of folks near to you...thats a good bit of landy country you live in :D

nobody ever seems to need help in Norolk :(

good luck with that Aurora, like storm says there's plenty of landy folk down Wilts way, I'm sure there's someone that can point you in the right direction. :)

what a fantastic response. We here so much about being a selfish society and yet here you are wanting to help but being in the wrong place! If nothing else that's made me feel a bit happier today!

We don't have peaks or lakes here, but we have white horses carved into hills and farm fresh eggs.

I'm grateful, and going to accept, any help we get.

I'll start looking for various panels to give you an idea of price...more info you get the more confident you will become of getting it back on the road...but you need to sort insurance out...get as much as you can whilst avoiding paying too much to buy it back.
