I've heard that side facing are legal (thankfully because I have 3) but if you put seatbelts or harnesses on them then they become illegal? Can anybody help me on this one?

Yes you can help? Or yes it's illegal||

Because the correct answer is. It isn't illegal to fit belts, to side facing seats.

It is illegal to use non conforming restraints to secure a CHILD in a motor vehicle. and restraints on sidefacing seats don't conform..

Copper was full of ****. Did you get his number if you did make a complaint.

My understanding was that you can't legally have kids on side face seats regardless of what restraints you have in place.

Nope only if they're under 5??

A child can legally sit in a side facing seat without the seat belt on, it is illegal to restrain them in the side facing seat.

Either way you will end up getting tickets from various cops due to the grey area.

Your options for legal reasons and litigation should one of your kids die in an accident due to a bodged Austin montego take off are, exmoor trim, puma tub and ancillaries(even this could be fraught with danger if accident occurs), or as I did sell the 90 and get a 110. It's a far better ride and the added benefit is that you don't have to carry the kids when you get where you've gone cos you will have managed to get the pram in the back,

The rules
Child Car Seats : The Law : From September 06 : FAQ

Q: I have sideways facing seats in my vehicle, can I still carry children in them from September?

A: Sideways facing seats are not a safe way to travel. An adult seat belt is not designed to restrain an occupant who is sitting sidewards, and the same applies to child seats.

Seats tested to UN ECE R44 are not designed, or intended for, vehicle's sidewards facing seats, and do not count as the correct restraint for the child. A child restraint cannot be used on a sidewards facing seat.

i didn't get his number an to be honest i just tend agree with them an let them get on with it or they tend to give you a hard time.:mad:to be fair he did say that he wasn't hanging round all night an if i pick him up down the road that's up to me

True, it's not worth arguing with them, incase **** kicks off

I think I'll just leave mine as they are and drive extra careful if I have anyone in the back, and only worry about kids if I have any
