Help with my Big Ends

Hi there I have removed my big ends due to knocking and found no white metal on the big end bearing on number 4 cylinder. Thus I have put in a new shell. The moment I try to tighten it up the engine wont turn over, or at all. I have used .010 at first then standard size but still no movement.
Whats wrong?

Its a 3 bearing petrol series engine if that helps.
Also the manual says the cap bolts should be talked to 85fp but I strip the threads at 65ft whats goring wrong? This is starting to get expensive!

what was the original shell size ?have you got the cap the right way round, no wonder your stripping the threads the big end cap nuts should be 25 ftlb or 35nm

That makes a lot of scenes about the bolts, thanks. The shell sizes are the same using calipers they are both 1.8mm thick I have lost my micrometre so that is the best I can do. but the originals are stamped with rover and the new are paddock spares standards. The caps I think are correct with the stamped numbers on the lesf hand side of the engine looking forwards.

Does it turn if you were to put the old shells back in for test ?

Think you need to get hold of a mic to see what bearing size you need otherwise it's just guessing. It could also be worth trying a different bearing manufacturer as I found two makes of std bearings to give different clearances. And failing a mic, plastigauge will tell you what's going on.

I have some how managed to do it. Using a mixture of the old and new bearings and making a bespoke selection for each journal, I have done it. Also I have found that some of the new bearings I tried were 010 or 020 bigger than standard size, even though they are marked the same. So a strong phone call to the manufactures tomorrow is in order. Thanks for the help.

Something is not right if you're mixing old and new, asking for trouble!

Run it like that and it will not last long.

Sounds like you need to check the clearance with some plasti-gauge
