I have a Landrover TD5 Defender, it's almost 5yrs old, I've owned it from new, regularly serviced and not worked hard, I have fitted it with Terrafirma suspension with a 2" lift plus the usual radius correction arms and rear trailing arms, poly bushes ect, it's only done 14 thousand miles, i've noticed that in 4th and 5th gear it has developed a rattle, when the engine is under load you can't hear it nor can you hear it when not under load, however if you feather the throttle gently it sounds like a bag of spanners, the noise seems to be coming from the gearbox, I've also noticed that if i build up the speed to about 50mph and dip the clutch i can hear the rattling as i freewheel down the road, i have no idea what it can be, has this ever happened to anyone before and can anyone give me some advice, thanks to all in advance.

i would check condition of oil in gearbox and transfer box ,drop a capful out can be many things but bearings do wear in transmission, helical gears as you have are pushed one way while pulling but may float on no load

Double Cardon prop sorted the problem out once and for all for me, thanks to all for the help.

Probably the rear prop, mine was exactly the same after fitting a 2" lift, from 40mph and up if you back off the throttle just a little it sounds like a long fart, technically speaking  try removing the rear prop and see if the noise is still there, if it isn't replace the prop with a wide angled jobby

I agree with pickup90, was having exactly the same problem as him, I've gone the whole hog, double cardon prop on the front and wide angle on the back, its like driving a different car now and the problem is sorted, I got the kit from Devon 4x4.

When i back off from 50mph + i get a rattle of sorts and its coming from the hand brake drum, if i back it right off it stops it but then have no hand brake !!!
