On the way home from work I overtook a tractor and trailer in fourth, gave it most of my boot and the truck pulled lovely etc. Changed to 5th and carrier on. Came to a roundabout and as I went to pull away, it felt really sluggish through all the gears and was having to give it loads of pedal to do the speeds I normally would. I stopped and check the pipes, all seem ok etc ( no smoke at all, normal temps etc) carried on home, but just before I got home, I stoppped the engine and took the air flow meter plug off. Seemed to pull again (although not very smooth) but much more power etc.

The air flow meter is only about 8 months old but can't work out what else to check bar taking it to the garage and plugging it in.

It's been de egr d So don't think it's that. Anyone got any other ideas what I can do??

is it a genuine or after market MAF?

It was supplied by an indie, not sure if genuine or not. Any way of telling. Charged me £70 if I remember correctly though!! Does the symptons above sound like the MAF to u?

yes and no. You could do with borrowing another MAF to confirm it. It's the lack of smoothness that is confusing things. Have you checked for signs oil in the injector loom?

No I haven't, it's the way it was fine then suddely after I booted it it went sluggish. I though I had blown a pipe off or something but all looks ok. Going to have another look in a min. When I say it wasn't smooth, as I pulled away in first the turbo seemed to kick in hard, it may have been cause I was giving it more pedal than usual though. Is it ok to drive with the MAf off? I may take it for another spin!

have you checked the air filter aint been sucked up the intake or that a hose hasn't de-laminated?

It is sounding like MAF though. It's ok to drive with MAF off too.

Ok, will go for a run after me dinner. Just had another look, all pipes seem ok, took the maf off, looks normal etc doesn't look dirty etc. I took the blue plug off under the rocker head bit at the front left and I put my finger up into where the pins are and it was a bit oily? Normal? How long can I run without a maf? I commute 80 miles a day!!

Cheers for all the help as well.

You can run indefinately with the MAF off. It will just run in a pre-set default mode.

The injector loom is the red plug going into the ecu and oil ingress can effect the running in the blink of an eye. There should be NO oil in the plug. Give the oily plug a squirt with electrical contact cleaner or carb cleaner and then allow it to run off. I use blue roll to mop it up with but you could get away with just letting it drip dry. Then see if it runs any better with the MAF reconnected.

Thanks, will look into the plugs location tomorrow. The plug at the front left of the engine wish you push upwards is blue and that had a little oil around it.

Went for a drive, started with maf connected, sluggish etc, disconnected it and it was much better (almost back to normal I think)

I'm a bit annoyed cause the maf is only about 8 months old! Might try and give it a clean first, although I does look clean. Is there anyway to check with a multiple meter etc or does it need diagnostics to check properly?

Cheers again

you could try cleaning it with MAF cleaner, electrical contact cleaner or carb cleaner and one of them cotton bud sticks that you use for picking out yer ear wax. A diagnostic puter is the only reliable (ish) way of testing the MAF other than robbing someone elses. Cheap MAF's rarely last for long.

LMAO...tis genuine...

Mine had the same fault before and after and we tried it on my mates when his went and it worked...he bought a new-un

If you want ill send it you..if it doesn't solve it post it back mate if it helps

I think it could be something more than the MAF. I had it disconnected today and it was running fine. I overtook something up a hill (lots of pedal again, same as last night) and it seemed to go into a limp mode.

So it seems to reset itself after you turn it off. Massive pain in the arse. Done a bit of reading and it could be the Turbo over boosting on full load and the ECU going into limp. A restart resets it.

Any ideas what could be causing the overboost. I noticed there seems to be a bit of metal hanging out the back of the intercooler. Could this cause something odd with the boosting?

The link above seems a common thing, but couldnt really find a difinative answer.

Massive pain!!

Mmmm..could be the actuator...I've fitted a boost gauge to indicate any issues.
You could wind your boost down a bit but if its not always done it it won't be a rod issue it would more likely be the actuator
