Thank you for the replies guys.
There is loads oil at the bottom of the intercooler when I took the bottom pipe off started to drip I know build up of oil is normal but I think this is excessive. Double checked all pipes connections and the other small pipes no holes on the intercooler.
Still a bit lost if it really is the turbo, my mates 300tdi doesn't make this noise, the whistle yes it sounds good but I don't think it's normal.
Going for a drive now keep you all updated later today after having my leg lamb.

Forget about the whistle and concentrate on the oil. As JM said run engine with turbo to intercooler hose off and check for oil drip from turbo.

Some oily residue in the pipes and intercooler is normal but a buildup of actual fluid oil is not and does suggest shot turbo seals.

You may have other issues such as internally delaminated pipes or a leak that only appears under pressure but you need to establish the integrity of the turbo urgently

If you're not confident about what you're looking for then take it to a mechanic who will know.......it only needs to take a few minutes of their time

Thanks guys,
I will run the engine with the hose off as blue beasty said and report back. Either way Tuesday will go to my local garage.

Hi Vince,
Yes I will make sure I do that and to be honest going to get new set of silicon hoses and will clean everything properly.

Update
Looked inside the turbo with a mirror blades look fine, one minor mark in one blade.
Checked all hoses again and decided to order a full set bearmach ones, run out time to run the engine with the intercooler hose off.
In work need to work late so no time for the garage to have a look at it.

The part of the blades that you can see are not the part that get damaged, it's the outer edges of the blade that get worn away as cause the whistling.

Any news on this? My 300 recently started making a noise when boosting and can't locate the noise. It's getting tiring having that noise.

We've just had similar problems with our 300tdi defender. Every morning from home it smokes white smoke for the mile or so until we get onto motorway then fine. Garage have just rung to say it needs new turbo .... so on the hunt !
Do I get a NEW one or a REMANUFACTURED ? Pros and cons please. The new one I've found only comes with a 6month warranty, the remanufactured comes with a 12 month and is £100 cheaper !
Any advice greatly accepted !

Update,

What I noticed now is on deceleration mainly when cold it puffs a lot white smoke very noticeable, last weekend took the intercooler off no damage, all the hoses replaced, noise still the same, a lot white smoke in the morning for the first couple miles, I just drive it very slow so I intoxicate anyone.

I have now sourced a second hand turbo with only 50k for £115.00, budget didn’t allow remanufactured, new or TGV!!!, seem to be in very good condition the car where was been taken from I did see the speedo did say 50k on it but I am still a bit doubtful of the true mileage but happy what I paid for it.

My brother is a bit handier than me to do replace the turbo and is flying from Portugal on the 10th May to do this for me, all the same time all filters will be replaced and new oil going for 10w40.

I will keep you all updated.

Update.

Disco now running perfect, no more smoke when cold, so here isa list what me and my brother done.
Time belt
P gasket
water pump
replaced turbo
oil change
new filters all round
new coolant
Clean intercooler
bushes replaced on rear trailing arm
new tyres maxis MT 215 85 16
tweaked turbo and pump with no excessive smoke same consumption but pulls much better, brother is the expert to do this.

One thing I used in the end when replacing the fuel filter was Liqui Moly diesel purge 2x 500ml cans, you simply fill up the fuel filter with it and run the engine at diferent revs this improved dramatically the smoke from the engine when on idle or on any other time to be honest, I usually did think these products just don't work but this changed my mind, brother did say this brand is the only one he would use no other, I do have a 500ml can left I will add to the tank before I go for a long drive maybe this weekend, well worth the £15 I paid.

Jobs to do.

Fit wadding kit
remove lower bumper
change diff oils
treat some rust spots and waxoil

A bit more happy now engine running much smoother and the power delivery is much better no more gear change bellow 1500rpm.

Let's wait for mot, due in June and see what surprises I might have. Lol.

Many thanks for all you guys that replied and really have a great respect for people that take their time to help others like me and how to guides found on this forum is a great help and save time.
I just wasn't able to do how to guide on what I done don't know how you guys do videos take photos and explain I most times couldn't even find the phone to take pictures. Lol

Update from me too ...... fitted a new(er) turbo as the old one had an awful lot of 'play' in it. After running it for a couple of days, the smoke has now ceased almost completely ! Thanks everyone for your help..... again !
