Right, I have done an offroad driving course and great fun and useful it was. Excellent really. Now I need to find a Disco, sensibly low mileage, late Disco 1 300TDi or early Disco 2 TD5. I want to put all terrain or mud terrain tyres on it without cutting the arches and probably replace the plastic bumpers with steel after market types. Any sensible suggestions where I can find the beast at a sensible price please? I am based near Bristol. BY the way, it has to be manual and have the diff lock connected inside, even if it has traction control. I'm told that some had the lever disconnected inside the cab, but you could still select diff lock underneath. True of false?

Early TD5s had the difflock mods before Land Rover reverted back to the difflock operated manually in the cab.

Finding a low mileage Disco may mean you will have a very long wait. Of course, it depends what you mean by low mileage. Bear in mind that vehicles today (last 15yrs or so) will clock up fantastic mileage provided they are maintained well.
What was considered high mileage 20 yrs ago is today pretty acceptable.
There was a time I wouldn't even look at a vehicle with over 80K but today 130K wouldn't concern me in the least, especially for diesel.

dont fink i would worry about the millage to much the maintainance is more important there was a fred a few days ago asking what millage have you on the clock most were into the hundreds and beyond to find a decent low millage disco 1 is like finding rocking horse **** the bodys and chassis will be gone well before the engine and gearbox fails

I guess a 120k TD5 will be good then, so long as it has FSH. I may have to gofor the late disco 1 300TDi as well to get the diff lock in the cab. I can live with that.

like robin said a less complicated leccy system on the 300tdi. stick some decent mud terrains on and your away....just make sure you do regular services and check oil, gbox, tfbox and axle levels.

I might be getting shot of my 300TDi (95) if I get the job I've applied for up in Scottyland.

It's low mileage, well in the low 200 thousands! Bet it's good for another 100k, at least.

And it'll come with a steering guard, second set of steel wheels with mud(ish) tyres and a gurt big roofrack.

i've taken both my standard TD5 and my 300 off road and laning... both are as good as each other in standard form, and infact the TD5's Traction control and hill decent makes for easy off road driving...

if you want an off road toy buy a 300
if you want a motorway cruiser buy a TD5

once you start off roading or laning, the car will degrade much quicker than just road use, if you want a motor that you can work on yourself, cheap and easy, buy a 300
