Hi Everyone

Hoping somebody can help!...

110 TD5. Was slow to start and was advised it was injector seals (no loss of power before any work was done). Had those changed together with loom. No oil in ECU. Was told seals had been changed recently (by highly reputable defender specialist) and that it was fuel pump.

Didn't notice any loss of power on journey home and everything seemed fine.

Next day, noticed loss of power when accelerating hard through 2nd to 4th with slight "squelching" sound as power suddenly drops. When changing up, pulls fine until high revs, squelches, power drops. I put it down to the pump on its way out.

Took to different garage for pump to be changed. All fine, but they couldn't start it next morning. Was told it was the cam shaft sensor. That was changed. Starts no problem but still a loss of power when accelerating up.

Over a grand later in parts and labour, I still have this new loss of power. I disconnected the MAF sensor. Same issue although I have noticed there is no hose clip on the large hose as it attaches to the MAF.

Not sure if this is a red herring, but on the day I noticed the loss of power, I found a 2 foot thin hose hanging off my sump guard. I thought I'd picked it up off the road and stupidly didn't keep it.

Anyone any idea what might be going on!!?

Cheers All.

Chris

waste gate is vacuum operated

Is it? edit : so it is.

Cheers

the waste gate seems to operate fine if I push it in and out with some grips.

I'm wondering if its something as simple as the missing jubilee clip that holds the large air tube on to the MAF sensor? I imagine an awful lot of air escapes without it but as someone who knows almost nothing about engines, I'm clutching at straws!!

yes but is it operating as it should ,has it had any fault codes read, did the failure occur at the same time you found the hose hanging

as far as I know the only fault codes related to Air Con (Which I don't have). Yes - the failure happened same morning I found the hose hanging. I can see that the small hose coming out of the waste gate is still there and still attached to another large tube at the other end.

Thanks everybody!

think I MAY have found the problem...

With the bonnet up and revving the engine hard, you can see the air intake hose at the bottom end of the turbo (I think) collapsing. I drove it without the air filter and it was fine so swapped out the cheap filter for a posh k&n filter. It’s improved it significantly but still lost power on long hills on motorway - the “squelching” sound I observed must have been the hose collapsing.

was left with choice of replacing that whole unit with. Genuine Land Rover one for £80 or forking out £300 for an aluminium one. Went for the cheaper one (silicone ones appear unavailable)

will report back if it fixes it.

picture of the offending part attached.

Was going to suggest pipe from inter cooler to turbo. Looking at your photo it looks a bit dodgy to me. If it’s loose or drawing air it will drop the power significantly.

Nope... so still losing power but not as bad as before the new air filter. Noticed it worse on long motorway hill climb. Drives fine with no air filter. Still noticing main air intake hose collapse on high revs even with brand new genuine Land Rover part.

got to be something to do with an air blockage somewhere if ok without any filter.

disconnected the pipe on the backside of air filter housing - does same.

wastegate fine but that wouldn’t cause main intake hose to collapse.

have new silicone turbo hoses. Reckon that would help? Any other suggestions- getting skint and frustrated

K&N are not the always the best they are oiled and can gum up the air flow sensors, try it with a genuine paper filter, your intercooler may well want a clean out they do get a bit of oil in them over the years.

Thanks Brian...

I may have fixed it. I had tried this before and it didn’t do anything but seems to have worked this time.

I unplugged both sensors into the MAF, drove it and it was fine. I plugged one back in, drove was fine. Plugged the other back in, drove and was fine!

no idea what was wrong but seems to have solved it. Happy days!!

Thanks so much to all for their help and advice. Steep learning curve for a novice!!

For someone who calls himself "pretty novice" I think you is doin well, man! These vehicles are really idiosyncratic. Many problems do not have obvious solutions.
Glad you got it fixed!:):):)
