Hello all, 2000 W-reg disco, fuel filler cap wont open, windows don't work and car will start when key is in position 2..................
It all started this morning, my other half said disco wasn't right, bit sluggish and juddering a bit, she borrowed my car, while i was sat in office the alarm started going off without any reason, pressed key fob and it stopped but then wouldn't re-alarm, on way home went to fill up with diesel but flap wouldn't open, went home to have a look, then found that when key was in position 2 it started the car and sounded as if the starter motor was still engaged, turned it off, tried again, put key in turn to P1 clock lights up and radio works, P2 ign. lights come on and engine starts and ign. lights go out, turn as if to crank to start and nothing happens but sounds as if the starter motor is still engaged. Also found out that the elec. windows don't work.
Bit long winded i know but thats the bare bones of it.

Can anyone shed some light on this please as need to get it sorted asap.

Thinking the Ignition barrel is knackered and fell to bits inside shorting out

Thanks in advance.

Take the interior fuse box out, lever the back, plastic cover off and see if the circuit board has signs of water damage. You'd be amazed at all the weird problems it causes and there seem to be an awful lot of these problems about at the moment (wet weather). I speak from experience. If not that, then the ignition switch does seem possible or failing that, the Body control unit.

Just had to replace my interior fuse box. The problems were slightly different to yours (indicators, rear wiper etc not working) but down to water getting in and shorting out some of the pins.

Went to work today, left disco parked on drive, thought about it all day, rang a land rover garage (Famous Four) they were very helpfull and gave a few suggestions to try, came home and all was ok, it had fixed itself, all that wasn't working last night now works fine, have checked the parts under the glove box and they all look ok, just had tea now back out again to check the fuse box under steering wheel, so who knows cuz i don't.

Well had a look at fuse box and all looks ok, been out and filled with diesel and gave her a road test and all is back to normal so what happened i've got no idea.

You can't actually see the fuse box problem unless you take it out & remove the back when you can see tracking etc on the circuit board. Like this:
