Hello people

I am currently on the boreder between Turkey and Iran and my Defender has just developed a fault with the temp gauge.

The needle suddenly wet all the way to the max and will not come down even when the engine as been off over night. I have checked the wire from the top of the engine and even when I disconnect it the needle stays in the red. The wires behind the dash, all look ok.

The car is running fine but don't really wont to go much further into Iran without a temp gauge.

Any ideas? do i need a complete new gauge?

Thanks for any help

could it be the earth is playing up on the gauge and causing it to max out just a thought i like the 130. i hope the gauge aint buggered up especially being outa the uk

put the wires onto the fuel guage and use that as your temp guage

im fairly certain that the fuel gauge is more important than the temp

check the earth on the back of the gauge. is it a 300tdi? all guages need to have the bodies earthed so have a daisy chain wire from one to another. check that over 1st. If your still in Turkey, you should be able to get a gauge shipped to a hotel/hostel/campsite there without too much bother.

Make sure its not a live wire shorting I had the alternator wire engine bay side wear through to the Dash instruments harness this is ALWAYS live and created a fire which luckily I was in the car with a spanner and fire extinguisher at the time. This wore through the dash wires and gave me all sorts of readings on the dash instruments completly ramdomly. Worth a check if nothing else!

Check the wiring harness that runs behind the engine block it has 2 plastic clips which fracture after lots of offroad use and the harness rests on th eback of a hot engine/bellhousing and rubs through.

A complete Punt but worth checking I assure you

beg to differ on that, would rather have a working temp guage than fuel guage anytime - fuel is very cheep and available in Iran so no problem for filling at every opportunity - how many headgaskets is he carrying to warrant not having a temp guage?

Not in my book.

If you run out of fuel you can tip some more in and be on your way with no damage and just the inconvenience of having to unearth your spare jerry can from all of your kit neatly stowed on top of it.

If your engine seriously overheats then no amount of fuel will get you going again especially if you burst a radiator hose, blow a head gasket, or seize the engine.
